Santa Clara Or UC Irvine

I think we all applied there as a backup school

It depends what you mean by commute. A good chunk of students go home on the weekend but about 80 percent of incoming freshmen live in the dorms at Irvine, and many of the older students live in off campus apartments close to campus. It’s not like most students drive in everyday and then just go back home mommy and daddy. Some people do that, but certainly not the majority.

wow you guys are way off. santa clara is a far better school than irvine-- it’s reputation and academics are much better, at least among anyone i know, and i have lived in the bay area almost my entire life. i would also say that santa clara is more “national,” whatever you mean by that. uc irvine is a state school made up almost completely of commuters, and one of the worst uc schools at that. santa clara is a private school with people from all over the state and lots from other states as well. santa clara is NOT a lower-middle class city (not that that should affect your decision) and it is NOT dirty. santa clara is beautiful, as is the santa clara university campus. it is NOT “some random city,” it is the heart of the bay area and silicon valley. there is lots to do-- scu is on the border of santa clara and san jose and very close to downtown san jose where there are lots of restaurants, theaters, and hp pavilion, among other things.

also, UCI doesn’t even have a business major and santa clara is especially known for how good their business program is… you seem really misinformed.

Wow. UCI is not made up “almost completely of commuters” and is not one of the worst UCs. Yes, it is a state supported school, you got that one right. I don’t think Santa Clara is a bad school at all, but I don’t know why you think that Santa Clara is more “national” or why you say that UCI is one of the worst UCs, or why Santa Clara’s academics are “much better” or why it is a “far better school”. Maybe that’s cause you’re from the Bay Area and obviously SCU gets more talk? Idunno. Yes, UCI does not have an undergrad business major. I would mention the huge difference in price between SCU and UCI but the OP said that the price doesn’t matter.

the uci website says “the middle 50% of the admitted class has an SAT Verbal score between 560 and 670 and a Mathematics score between 590 and 710 …the largest number of freshmen students will be enrolling from Los Angeles County, followed by Orange County, the Bay Area counties, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, and San Diego and Imperial Counties.” so yes, it is a commuter school, and test score averages are lower than those of scu.

How is it lower?
I look at UCI site and their avg score for verbal: 560-670 and math: 590-710
And I look at SCU site and their avg score for verbal: 550-640 and math: 560-660

wow, you’re right. well, scu still has a better reputation.

xranger: your figures are for those accepted. uci’s average sat is below 1200. which is below ucd, ucsb and ucsc’s sat scores

UCI has a lot of people enrolling from socal counties, but it’s not like they all drive into school everyday and leave. Also, there is a large contingent of norcal people, like myself, who hardly ever go home. I don’t think SCU has a better reputation than UCI either. I don’t think SCU is a bad school at all, I’m just saying that I don’t know where that idea comes from besides SCU getting more talk in the bay area since it’s, well, in the bay area.

acceptance-wise and SAT-wise, UCI is slightly higher, although not waaay higher or anything. Also, if you are in-state, SCU costs about 23,000 more dollars per year in tuition.

sixthbatter: all the figures are for those who are admitted.
the avg sat for admitted UCSB fall 2005 students is 1270, and ucsc is 592 verbal and 614 math, which makes it about 1200-1210.
and UCI is 560-670 for verbal and 590-710 for math, so it’s about 1260-1270, and that scores are from 2004 year so I’m sure it has gone up for the 2005 year. and for davis the avg scores for admitted students are about 1246 for the 2004 year.
so actually UCI is higher than UCSC and about the same as UCD and UCSB.

so santa clara has an avg sat score below uci’s? i find that hard to believe since it gets so many silicon valley types.

You rule, sixthbatter.

“so santa clara has an avg sat score below uci’s? i find that hard to believe since it gets so many silicon valley types.”

That logic doesn’t make any sense at all. that’s like saying SCU is better than Caltech because they get all those “silicon valley types”. Or San Jose State is better than UCLA because there are a lot of “silicon valley types” there.

The hookers in Cambridge, MA must be smarter than the OC hookers. And the hookers in Silicon (or is it silicone?) Valley must be better at computer programming than the hookers in the OC.

alicantekid and yackityack: Your incorrect use of logic on this board is evidence that

a) UCI is a worthless ****hole
b) Affirmative Action is as useful as the borderpatrol on the mexican border
c) UCI has lower SAT scores than SCU and UCSC

Seriously, you’ve made 21 posts and 11 are bashing UCI. What do you have against Irvine?

“Choosing to attend UCI was the biggest decision I had to make in my life up until I was 17 and 10 years later I haven’t regretted it for a second. I had a lifetime of memories there, got a great…”

So, you’re in your late twenties. *** are you doing on this board?

“I was 4/4 (UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCI) for undergrad and 1/1 (UCLA Anderson) for grad school.”

You have a lot of free time in the middle of a workday for a UCLA MBA.
And you must be insane for choosing UCI over UCLA. I’d say that’s insane now, but this was ten years ago. I guess that’d make you a liar. But, as they say, “this is a free country” and speak what you will, Mr. UCLA MBA man.

Yeah, I’m in my late 20s. What am I doing on this board in the middle of a workday? I’m getting paid by your mom and dad’s tax dollars while I surf the net, that’s what I’m doing. Each time I post I set your family back another meal.

And I’m starting the MBA this fall. I don’t have it yet. And if I was going to lie I’d say I had a Wharton MBA.

And don’t hate on me because you didn’t get into UCLA out of high school and you had to transfer there.

I don’t want to start **** with a UCLA MBA student-to-be. Please have mercy. And I personally apologize for my vices against you and your undergraduate institution. We will be at the same school next fall and I wouldn’t want you to kick my ass and roll me down Janss steps. Peace.

You have yet to define what my incorrect logic is or justify yours. And spewing out more baseless anti-uci rhetoric doesn’t prove anything. What did UCI ever do to you? I think UCLA is a good school, I’m not gunna go around bashing it. Jeez.
