Buffalo Thunder is a casino. (with a resort attached, but still primarily a casino)

RE:

the utopian community near the Rio Grande parking area

Do you mean Arroyo Hondo?

Arroyo Hondo was the site of the first action of the Taos Revolt in 1847. New Mexico was still part of Mexico and the US federal forces were occupying state northern part of the state. Much to the disgruntlement of the the people who lived there. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1868 ended the Mexican American War and ceded what is now California, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, plus most of Colorado and Arizoanand parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Wyoming.

In late 60’s, there was a populist uprising in northern NM and southern CO, led by Reies Tijerina and Alianza Federal de Mercedes. Tijerina was arrested and held in Tierra Amarilla Courthouse which was then raided by his armed supporters who hoped to free him from federal custody. A major shoot out occurred.

Land rights in northern NM are still a very touchy topic.

BTW, Spanish as spoken by the long time residents of northern New Mexico is unique and spoken nowhere else in the world.

Tent Rocks has been closed for several years and as far as I know has still not reopened.

I live in Santa Fe, so I can try to answer any specific questions. I would check here - Calendar of Events - Santa Fe Convention and Visitors Bureau and here - Calendar of Events - Santa Fe Convention and Visitors Bureau and make any reservations ahead of time. It gets pretty busy here in the summer!

Yep, got it. You’re not the first poster to mention the closure so I’m sure OP is aware now.

Following. Am on a high school friends trip to Santa Fe later this fall. Will be only for a long weekend so technically we will only have two days there.

If you had to choose between Cafe Pasqual’s and Geronimo which would you choose?

Pasqual

Two different leagues.

Geronimos is world class and is a dinner restaurant; Cafe Pasqual’s is a crowded–but comfortable so long as you like your neighbors–breakfast place and lunch crowd during which it is first come, first served.

Never had dinner at Cafe Pasqual’s.

Probably best to select based upon which menu is more appealing to you and your guests/family.

Conde Nest lists the best restaurants in Santa Fe, NM. First listed restaurant is Geronimo’s. Scroll to the bottom of the page for hotels & spas.

We enjoyed both, but Geronimo was divine.

Menus and photos. Met a well known influencer who happened to be on the LA writers strike when we were having brunch. Made for a fun day. I recommend the community table.

Not sure if I mentioned Santacafe or Coyote Cafe & Rooftop Cantina. Same owner for both Santacafe & Coyote Cafe. (The Rooftop Cantina is casual & gets lots of locals.)

Well trained staff at Santacafe. Coyote Cafe looks great.

Might be best to ask the concierge at your hotel for restaurant recommendations based on desired cuisine and type of atmosphere.

Cafe Pasqual’s is great for breakfast and lunch. You will be close to your neighbors & typically can join in on their conversations. Government workers (state capitol) seem to be the bulk of the lunch crowd.

We went to the rooftop cantina at Coyote Cafe for drinks (cocktails and the guacamole were both great) before dinner at Pasqual. We really liked the dinner, both the food and wine were excellent, but agree with the comment about difference in style and the tables being close together: we prefer that neighborhood feel to a dress up fine dining restaurant.

As already noted, Cafe Pasqual’s and Geronimo have different vibes. Are you only planning to eat out once in Santa Fe? That would be a shame as New Mexican cuisine is so flavorful. This is a tough choice because I love the casual, friendly atmosphere at Pasqual’s but I also enjoy fine dining. So, Pasqual’s for breakfast and Geronimo for dinner. I know that’s not helpful but I can’t choose.

Yes. We were staying on Canyon Rd…lucky us! It was a longish walk, but we could walk to Pasquals for breakfast, and we did. If you are looking for breakfast/brunch…that would be my choice.

Geronimos for dinner is great, but it’s a fancy restaurant. If that’s what you are looking for, go for it.

I’m supposed to pick one “nice” restaurant. The rest will be “regular” restaurants. lol

Then pick Geronimos for the nice restaurant…and call Pasquals a regular restaurant…

This is one of the most interesting aspects about Santa Fe dining–the people one meets. Everyone tends to be very open, friendly, & talkative.
