SAT is still hard to get in some places

“navigate the path” means different things to different people.

CB is chartered in New York State, under the aegis of the State AG, and files federal tax returns. If NYS or the feds have no issue with their offerings, the answer is to change the law/regs to make clear what ‘navigate the path’ requires. Otherwise, their Board can ‘keep on truckin’.

I’d say no the school did not let us down, because it was a subject that the high school did not and never has taught. They didn’t have the facility to administer it but they were super helpful in connecting me with other district schools. So my kid’s school wasn’t the issue. It was that we found ourselves in a weird situation of trying to sign up for a subject that simply wasn’t taught in our district and was not administered widely because of the language lab requirement. (The school does teach AP languages but this one language AP had different requirements than the French and Spanish APs).

At the end of the day the AP was a cherry for my kid. She speaks the language fluently and figured why not just take it. I had no idea that for AP subjects there are no “community-wide” testing centers, they are all administered through high schools.

So if you’re a student at a private school that has dropped all APs (for example) you’ll have to find the spots yourself. And high schools prioritize their own students and often fill up the tests so depending on where you are it can be tricky.

I had a friend in the same situation with his son that year who was looking for a spot to take the music theory (I think?) AP. It was a specialized subject that the high school didn’t offer, but his kid was highly skilled and wanted to take it. They never found a spot anywhere.

Our private school has no problem administering AP tests for any subject regardless of whether it was taught, so YMMV. Its an community with lots of internationals, so any AP foreignlanguage can and is tested, regardless of whether it is offered. No subject matter expertise was required to proctor and any existing lab was sufficient. If schools choose to not offer tests they are fully capable of hosting, I am not sure why CB would intervene for that.

As noted above, thousands of NYS students already get fee waivers for the plentiful testing sites in NYS, so I wouldnt expect legislative action on this issue.

ICYMI, I’m reposting the above.

I’d ask that the users who managed to get the other thread shut down for this behavior should really refrain from repeating their actions here.

Additionally, this thread is not about AP testing. If someone wants to start a thread about AP testing sites, feel free

So I read about Oakland and saw one other site, St Augustine’s. Just how many sites were actually closed on the day of the test?

Doesn’t appear that the test was rescheduled with spots for all 1400 students. Sounds like each student had to scramble on their own (also sounds like the onus is on high school districts to create more availability):

You can check the CB website. That weekend was relatively problem free, with just a handful of closures, but there are always some. I guess testing is so rare in some places that closure is major news. Back when we were in testing mode, there were local closures fairly frequently due to weather, traffic, or in one case a local marathon that hasn’t been considered. Local schools try to plan for everything, but obviously can’t. AP tests were interrupted midway through one year by an unfounded threat of school shooting, during a period of heightened concern on that issue. Somehow everything worked out on makeup days.

Truly sorry the OP had an ordeal to get tested. It didnt need to, and shouldnt, be that way.

Test update…rescheduled for this Saturday in SF at a hotel near Union Square. At least there is good shopping. LOL. Third kid…first test in home area code. Winner winner.

I know what area code you are then and it’s like another job trying to get testing in our area code. Happy to hear it was rescheduled. S25 has a couple of friends who were also at the Oakland debacle.

Decades ago, I remember having to go to other high schools in the region (not in the same school district) to take the SAT and Achievement tests. So even then, willingness to host was nowhere close to universal.

The digital SAT adds to the host site requirements by needing reliable networking with enough capacity, which apparently the hotel failed with the volume of test takers.
