I have seen some gorgeous mid century homes that kept the terazzo floors. Absolutely beautiful!
A. I think shag carpets will make a comeback. i see it in my daughter’s face when I talk about raking the carpet when I was little.
B.Fast furniture will always be used. Making it nicer are “hacks” celebrated by instagram. Starter homes are smaller and it just fits better.
C. Nautical motifs - will stay if you live near the beach. Add wicker in this instance too…
D. I do need a fern in every room. It doesn’t have to be a boston fern. They don’t often mind low light. The one in my dining room is called Sideshow Bob.
E. vertical blinds. I rent. They are there. I could decorate with a valance…but that would be an out of date trend…
F. Popcorn ceiling -see E
G. I am trying to find a great ruffled bedskirt.
H. Lace tablecloth/doily. Why the hate?
I - I do not want pooled drapes over my kitchen sink.
J. I love colored cabinets in the kitchen. Get what you love people!
K. butcher board counters are a modern take on the old style of laminate woods.
L. I think a conversation pit comeback would be fun! better than the great room concept.
We have a few. Vinyl floors in our upstairs bathrooms…those will get replaced. We have granite counters, and love them. The next owner can replace them. Popcorn ceiling…it’s just a huge job to make them go away. And we have valances only in our LR and DR…no curtains.
We have nice wool braided rugs in our FR and breakfast room. We really like them a lot. But we need a new couch in the FM and are having trouble finding something that goes with this style rug.
When we move from this house…we will cheaply sell the orientals in our LR and DR.
We don’t have wallpaper in this house.
One thing we want to update…we want all white outlets and switches. We have white in some rooms…but that builders beige in most. Those have to GO.
Back to talking about trends. Apparently it was a trend at some point to put wallpaper on the ceiling! Our bedroom had a textured off white wallpaper on the ceiling. Ugh.
I still like wicker furniture - but again an updated version and in the right place. Like no big flowery cushions. A solid fresh cushion is nice.
Anything country-fied - bye bye. Modern farmhouse is fine. I do like the retro vibe like the Smeg appliances.
I’d love to get rid of our clunky living room coffee table for something more simple and MCM-ish.
Not a fan of any overstuffed furniture - never have been!
I remember when I was redoing my kitchen in the early 2000’s telling people some day we will look at a kitchen with dark granite counters and cherry cabinets and stainless appliances and say that is so 2000. Well that day has come.
I think much of the trend stuff doesn’t look bad if it wasn’t extreme. If you did the whole Tuscan kitchen thing including the red walls and Tuscan tiles you will probably feel it is out of date today. If you just have some granite and a normal back splash and floor with a neutral wall color, you won’t feel that way.
A few years ago I purged my house of the many dried flower arrangements I had (some I had put together myself) they felt dated and were dust collectors.
The one thing on the list I can’t believe is Tiffany lamps. To me a Tiffany lamp is classic and timeless (I have a nightlight type one like somebody upthread mentioned).
This is a great thread! I am guilty of the chunky headboard. We have a king size sleigh bed but I still really like it. We live in an old town, but our house is new construction as all of the older capes and salt boxes get bought up and torn down and new builds go in.
We have all of they grey’s and whites. The builder put in gorgeous craftsman moldings and millwork that I could not bear to cover up… On our windows, I did no panels but put on 4 inch slat no center tilt plantation shutters. They look very modern as they are so wide and don’t have the traditional bar going down the middle.
Not matter if you are on the cutting edge of design ideas, in 10-20 years, most of it will be dated.
I think refreshing one’s decor every 15 years or so is NOT extreme or wasteful.
But I’ve replaced my live plants with dead ones.
Totally agreed! We tried very hard to stay away from design trends with our remodel and took our cues from what was original to the house. I have all the original built ins in the dining room and living room so we matched the kitchen cabinets (basically simple shaker) but also took inspiration for the pulls and latches. We have a quartzite counter that looks like marble. Marble is in the two main bathrooms. Hopefully it still looks cohesive enough to stand the test of time.
I have trompe l’oile painting in the dining room and powder room. I spent hours planning it (pre-internet), and still love it. I had a decorator design the valances and used tassels (oh the horror!). Again, still love it. All my window treatments were custom made with added details like braid and covered buttons. Hate, hate, hate the ready made valances and panels.
Our furniture is a print. Hides a multitude of sins. Would love new furniture, but don’t want a solid color. Plus today’s furniture is made so cheaply compared to 20 years ago.
I like my decorating style. I use a lot of yellow. It’s a happy warm color. Could never do gray. I. Don’t. Care. If. It’s. The. In. Color! I want to feel happy and cozy in my home.
If you saw my home, you would say it’s dated. I say it’s beautiful.
Our house is 36 years old. Our basic base is beige. I am not going to the trouble and expense of updating to gray. Now it’s getting difficult to find accessories. I wanted to pick up some new hand towels for the downstairs bath and I faced a sea of gray. I did find one set that worked. Funny you posted this as my incident just happened today and I was going “humph, who woulda thunk it” to myself.
I have a Tiffany lamp, granite countertops, some simple valences and a pine hutch that is beautiful.
So what are the “in” countertops these days? We have granite, and I’ve always said at some point people would say they are so “turn of the century.”
We are getting ready to paint most of our common area a “greige” color (sherwyn Williams repose gray). Are we making a mistake? We are painting our bedrooms shades of blue and gray, and I don’t care if they are “popular” colors or not. Our bedroom furniture is “shaker” style cherry I think. I like it well enough, but wouldn’t get it if we were buying today.
We have very simple mahogany dining room furniture that I actually really like, and we have painted paneling in our “office” that I’m too cheap to replace.
I have “issues” with committing to things that should last a long time (like furniture, drapes, etc. That just means I tend to do nothing, so my house is NOT well decorated, but it’s not offensive to anyone either. (We do have a chandelier in our formal dining room (used maybe 4 times a year) that we refer to as the “Olympic chandelier.” It’s incredibly tacky fake brass with five(?) rings that come out from the center. Yes it should be replaced, but it’s kind of a fun “conversation piece” too. It took me 9 years to convince my husband to put ceiling fans in several rooms -he’s less inclined to spend on decorating than I am.
@1214mom Quartz and natural Quartzite seem to be in the “in” surfaces right now. I was planning on granite for my new kitchen but found a quartzite stone that I fell in love with. It looks like marble but is much more durable and stain resistant. For my old house, that look seemed to fit in better with the time period of the house. I did put in quartz for my master bath because I was worried about make up, nail polish, hair color, etc… getting on it. Everything wipes right up with some soft scrub. It’s like a miracle surface.
In terms of color, I think paint is so easy to change that you should go with what you like. Our house is a combination of greys, beiges, and blues which accents well with the dark wood floors that are throughout the house. I think it’s warm and cozy. Lots of people told us grey was on it’s way out but I like it anyway!
Grey may not be as exclusively “in” as it was. I walked by a Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams furniture store today and was surprised to see that all the displays were far more beige than gray. Looks like they have both right now.

@momofsenior1, I have read the same about gray going out. But I never got a chance to do it, so I’m going with it. Grays, white, cream, blue, and a few pops of color-maybe butterscotch or caramel. Oh, a a little black here and there. We have a black iron stair rail going down into our “conversation pit.”
Also a mirror with black frame to pick up on that.
I am looking forward to the new color scheme. By the time we sell this house, it wouldn’t matter what I’d put in, it would be “on its way out.”
Triple agreed. A top realtor once said, look whatever you put in your new house will eventually be outdated and you’ll want to change it. So just put in what you LIKE and don’t worry about it.
Also wanted to add…l we have “nude” hardwood floors on all four floors. Most of our area rugs are shag. They are patterned, but high pile area rugs are just as in as the zero pile cowhide ones that we have in our dining room and office. This is our office rug, have a corresponding pattern in our dining room.

This is just to say that many different piles and textures are in right now. If it works in your decorating scheme then go for it! It’s your house, as long as you love it then
who cares!
@LTmomof2 - nice rug!!
