Yes - I have been subscribed ever since I learned about it a few years ago. Our county clerk has a great property website, and it’s super easy to sign up for alerts right on the website.
Received another email from Prime Billing Department at Amazon. Clearly fake. They must think that if they are persistent that I’ll fall for it.
An FYI - awhile back I posted how I got an email about an order I did not place from Lowes. The email address looked legit. Everything looked legit, but if I logged into my Lowes account - not from the email - no order showed up. Since then I’ve gotten several more of these emails.
Last night I actually bought something from Lowes - a dryer to be delivered Friday. So now I’m getting real emails from Lowes. I noticed on my phone in my Gmail account, the Lowes logo shows up as the sender. The bogus ones have LI in a circle.
I checked the email addresses:
Real Lowes: do-not-reply@notifications.lowes.com
Bogus Lowes: do-not-reply@confirmation.lowes.com
They are getting good.
I just got an email from my “cousin” asking me to open and sign a document. It specifically says to open it on a desktop or laptop. No, not doing that, and have notified my cousin.
An asphalt company truck guy came to my door. Parked his fancy new pickup with logo (local area code number) in my asphalt driveway. A very young looking guy knocked at the door. I’ve decided I’m not opening it to any one I don’t know. I asked from the front window which can be heard outside -what do you want? He said -I’m here because your husband wanted us to work on your driveway. I told him I don’t think so. He insisted and said he has his name right here. Then proceeded to say H’s full name and said he had his phone number. H was upstairs, so I called H on my phone. H said no he did not. OK so I said no he did not and while I was talking to H my phone got a call from this truck company I did not answer. In my very stern way I said NO. And he left. I was prepared to call the police. I took photos of the truck and plate.
I looked up the company. It is a company in town with a C+ BBB rating for forceful tactics and poor workmanship and sending out young boys.
That was frankly scary. I’m glad I decided not to open the door any more. He was very aggressive.
So not sure if this is a scam, but I wanted to share. I received a call from a financial institution this morning asking if I had written a check for an amount just under $10,000. I was confused and said what are you talking about, and then told the caller that I was going to call my bank directly. Turns out there was a fraudulent check written on my account. I looked at the check online and it had my signature! But the check number was for a blank check that was in my checkbook. The payee and the amount of the check was printed. I also found out that a check I had written in August to the GA dept of revenue was never cashed. I write very few checks. The one to GA for estimated taxes I mailed inside the post office. My bank’s fraud department is working on this. I had to freeze my checking account, open a new one, etc. Now I have to notify all the merchants that automatically debit or credit my account with my new information. The bank is going to give me back my money, but what a mess. It has caused me great distress. There must be a thief either at the USPS or the GA dept of revenue. I don’t write many checks - mainly to family and the government - but no more. Everything is now set up for online payments.
There’s been a lot of USPS check issues I’ve heard about. It was epidemic in a town near me, though I don’t think anyone was ever apprehended. My S’s gf had her rent check washed and rewritten a couple years ago. Her landlord wanted checks. She put it in a mailbox but it never got to landlord. It happened to a lot of people in her town.
The mailbox (yup, the whole mailbox) in the parking lot of our local post office, located on a well traveled road in a nice area, was stolen one night. The P.O. clerk told me that they figured people were stealing checks to whitewash & reuse. I never drop mail in an outside box … but I didn’t think about the fact that once sent, I have no control over where the mail sits when delivered (or whether there are people in the chain of custody who might not be trustworthy).
Our lawn mower guys don’t take Venmo, which I use – only Zelle, which I don’t use. So I’ve been sending them checks every month and mailing them in one of the big blue mail boxes around town. I guess I need to set up an account with Zelle, but then I get nervous that too many vendors/people have direct access to my bank account.
I think I’m going to contact Jon Ossoff’s office. I hear that they’re very good at following up on issues.
Sure sounds like a scam to me. Terrible stuff! It’s good your bank contact you.
It does make me shake my head about an older family member that refuses to do online banking. Does not trust that. Writes many checks (but does try to mail from the post office).
As you probably know, you shouldn’t write checks with regular ballpoint ink or sharpie. A gel-ink or antifraud pen gives at least a layer of protection.
Our local POs switched a couple of years ago to outdoor mailboxes with smaller, letter sized slots because apparently people were going “fishing” with glue traps in the boxes with the old pull down handle. Went to an outdoor box in a neighboring town that is an industrial area and they had added metal teeth to the slot so that envelopes could only go in and not come out.
Oh, no! So that means the bank loses that money? Wow, that sucks. I write very few checks, but I do write some big ones. I guess I’ll try to eliminate any that have to be mailed, but it’s not always possible. Sorry for what you’re going through!
I always use unwashable pen markers now if I have to write a check. Yes I agree. Calling Ossoff’s office is a great idea. The senator’s offices can make things happen. I have a friend who had something very scam happen with the US Postal Service in her state, where a large package was never delivered and all they did was cut out the label and mail it back to her so it looked like it had been delivered, so they declined her insurance claim. She went up the chain through the Postal Service, which was a waste of time, finally reached out to her senator or congressman and got it fixed pronto quick. They even refunded the postage She paid on this very heavy box.
I did use a gel pen. I believe my bank will go after the bank that deposited the check, Navy Federal Credit Union. I filed a report with the fraud department of the USPS. My next step is to contact the GA Tax Center.
Hope they don’t hit you with a late fee. What a pain so sorry.

I just got an email supposedly from my cousin asking me to esign a document. Nope, not even opening the email.
It’s been years since I’ve opened the door when it’s knocked on. Even with the Ring camera, if I’m not expecting you, you can just go away.
