Yes, we always take our checks to main post office and put the checks in the mail slot at post office. So far in over 50 years for me and 60 for Glenn, no one has stolen or altered any of our checks.
I had sometimes put checks in the blue mailboxes but I guess I will stick to putting them in mail slot at post office. We fortunately have thus far been spared stolen mail. My relatives have had checks stolen from their mailboxes, as has our PT.
Our PO has taken to sealing up the big blue boxes outside and at the drive through. You must now park and go inside. The inside is locked up promptly at 6, so no more late night/weekend mail drops. Mail theft has been really bad here. Master keys stolen, banks of a 100 mailboxes blown open with mini explosives. It took a while, but I finally got all those that were sending lives checks at work to switch to ACH.
The electrician says that he is unable to apply to the website for the permit to do the electrical work because it’s out of order (likely due to the Crowdstrike). Oh well, fortunately it’s not urgent, but just more delay.
Just heard that Tuesday just before the PO closed, a man drove up, walked inside, and walked out with a box filled with outgoing mail, including lots of priority mail - he’s not been caught.
Be careful if you write checks to use a pen that cant be washed (uniball or some sharpies). Lots of problems with check washing> Has happened to several friends who caught for a very long time to get their $ back from the banks that paid on fake checks.
True story - my love just told me a priority mail piece he put in our mailbox to go out the 12th isn’t showing tracking info. He lowered his head as he told me because we talk all the time about the mail theft happening. He didn’t even think about it. Anyway he filed a police report as well as one with the PO. But…in the process, he learned a couple of interesting things…the carriers do have scanners in their possession but aren’t required to use them when picking up mail and that the scanners at the PO are on the ceiling and “sometimes” they don’t scan a package. Great. Sadly it was a rare Prince CD which he’d sold. So now is out the $ on the sale and the CD is floating around. He’s quietly scanning selling sites to see if it shows up. His is signed by Prince and the band as he met them through Sheila E.
Ugh. I hope it turns up somehow. I’ve had 2 USPS shipments (one a passport renewal, one a package) eventually show up even though scan progress indicated they were “missing” for a few weeks.
The story gets weirder - after filing the police report and the report with the PO, in the mailbox yesterday was a clear pouch with what appeared to be the mailing label used to send the CD, the pouch read something like “found separated from the mail” (the “label” is in perfect condition, no creases, tears, nothing) - and…it’s not the paper we use when we print mailing labels. It’s thicker and slicker, and would never print out of our printer - not sure what it means, but JustaMom’s love is taking a re-printed version along with this one, to the police to show them the difference.
It was inside the pouch and no, he didn’t use a pouch. In fact it was glued to the package…and nope, no sign of glue or tears where glue might have been.
I can’t recall the last time I’ve been victim to a traditional scam, but I did have a problem with Netflix account today. I received an email saying I changed my Netflix plan. Looking online, premium plan was checked (4K, 6 devices) when I had previously instead subscribed to standard (1080p, 2 devices). The plan upgrade was made from someone whose IP reports as being in a similar area of CA to me and is using the Opera browser. The upgrade occurred during the middle of the night, while I was sleeping.
I expect the “scammer” tries to find a poorly monitored Netflix account that he/she can use (or the person he/she sells to can use) without being noticed. I expect they need to switch to 6 devices to insure that their watching will not trigger the max device limit, if we are watching at the same time. If I was previously a premium subscriber, then no change in subscription would have been necessary, and I may not have noticed as quickly.
I changed my password and logged out of all devices, but am unable to recover the cost of upgrade to premium since Netflix apparently has a policy of not permitting plan downgrades until next billing period. Fortunately the loss was only ~$1. I pay in Turkish Lira where standard is 229 TL and premium is 299 TL. I’m about half way through my billing period, so (299 - 229) TL per month * (15 days left / 30 days per month) * ($1 per 33 TL) = $1.06 loss .
