Scams You've Encountered

One only needs to call the number for the bank directly and not use the number in the email. While going to the bank in person is fine, no one should believe that they need to do that. It can help older relatives to make a list for them of the direct numbers for banks/credit card companies so that they learn the rule is always to call the number they have and NOT the number in an email. I put these numbers for my mom on the first page of the calendar she keeps on her wall.

I was only telling you what the guy told me. I would have just called.

Yep of course. Just saying it can help elderly relatives to have the numbers written down somewhere very accessible as a reminder to always call bank or cc company directly. And not think they need to go in. My mom always thinks she needs to go in person. It’s easier fir her than trying to find the number online sometimes but having the numbers written down makes her call.

I am replying to this post from March of 2021. I am in coastal North Carolina. He saw that our house was new, so he asked for our neighbor’s number. I said I would request neighbor to call him. He did. He wanted to use the neighbor’s insurance to pay for a replacement roof. The neighbor wrote me back to let me know he declined and felt it was fraudulent. I knew these scams were happening in Florida, but now I see they have moved up to North Carolina. Please do not fall for it. Your insurance company will likely cancel you in the next year.

I have been getting a slew of bogus texts about payment issues, data limits reached, you name it. I delete and mark as scam but more come from new numbers. Today’s was a new twist. It said they apologized for overcharging me. Too bad it was nonsense!

I received a scam “Coinbase invoice” email claiming that I had been charged $7,999 via PayPal. I have neither a Coinbase nor a PayPal account, but it was so nice of them to include an actual, legitimate link to PayPal’s “how to spot phishing” site

Has everyone else been inundated with unending requests for contributions to a political candidate? Promising 100% matches from famous names (increasing each week, and now 700% matches). Always from different number or organizations. Just send them your money.

Texts are now chastising me for my multiple delays.

So ready for this to be done!

Yes, I’m getting a lot of texts. I can’t figure out how they got my number. Are they just sending out messages at random?

I have not received one. Nor has my love or our D. Sounds like someone might have sold your number in a database.

Well, this was actually funny! I got a text from an organization that I support telling me about another rally that they are having. It is playing out loud in my car. I then got a call, as it was reading the message aloud, from a friend whose name is Janet. So I said something, but my phone picked it up as “Jesus” and sent it as a text to the organization who was sending me their rally information! So the organization sent a message saying they will go ahead and remove me immediately and so sorry to bother me ! lol

Wondering about the collective wisdom of CC as they relate to scams and privacy issues:

We’re hunting for a new apartment (2nd home). We have not done so for at least 10 years. Most rental managers are now asking for online applications, together with scanning A LOT of personal information - including a full copy of drivers license (or other official gov’t document such as passport), bank account information, etc. You can redact account numbers, but they also ask for SS numbers elsewhere on these forms.

I know they want to check employment to verify income (hard when retired). I know they want to do a ‘background check’ (also ok with us).

We would be very cautious and refuse if asked by an unknown entity. The management companies are legit in this case. However, I remain extremely hesitant to upload a full copy of all these documents online.

Thoughts?

I am looking forward to responses to this too. My s’s had to do this when they were renting, but first it was from a private homeowner so a bit less worrisome as they lived upstairs. It’s very unsettling to have to provide this info!

I would bring up the concern(s) to the management office, and ask about alternatives. In 2024 3/4 there has to be alternatives.

Here’s a new one: claiming a package is lost. Check the fake email address:

I love this person who tried to scam the scammer

That’s funny! But I would personally hesitate to communicate with a scammer and let them know they had a real working number.

I agree. I wouldn’t either (although I’ve been tempted to, many times). I use the “delete and report junk” option on my iPhone.
