Scams You've Encountered

I got an odd email the other day from a name that sounded vaguely familiar. I asked husband if we knew someone with that name, not that I was going to reply. He said he thought it was one of a couple we met here ten years ago and haven’t seen or heard from since.

Either it came from hijacked email or just a coincidence that the scammer used this name.

Got a call from “dermatology department” asking my husband first name last name to call back. Google sez the number it came from is some scammer.

I get those too. Sometimes from someone I’m close to, who knows full well that I order from Amazon and can do it themselves, and sometimes from people I haven’t spoken to in decades.

Never mind.

I had a very pleasant message today from the tax department about some outstanding taxes associated with my name. Oh no!

I get those occasionally, where I recognize the email address as someone I was on a group email with many many years ago. Like kids’ sports teams or whatever. I just assumed there was some kind of hack that harvested people’s contact lists and the data is still being passed around on some kind of black market.

H got a call from a medical center’s radiology department that he has no connection with (his radiation treatments have been at another medical system). We figure it’s some sort of spam/scam.

I’d Google the phone number. It is most likely not associated with any radiology department. Like the “dermatology department “ call I got a couple of times.

They didn’t leave a message so we won’t bother—maybe they got digits of phone number mixed up.

If we don’t recognize the number we just let it ring. If the call is legit, the caller will leave a message, which 99.9999999% of the time they do not.

We get this transcripts of a voicemail once a day, but our landline doesn’t ring. The name of the caller and number changes. So the call doesn’t come thru, but comcast says they can’t stop the transcript from hitting my email?!!

“Hey, this is Veronica calling from Personal Loan Review. For your records, this is Veronica Garcia with the Credit Review Department. I’m reaching out regarding your funding request. I’ve tried to connect with you a couple of times since the new year and I wanted to give you a quick update. Your request has been reviewed and it’s now showing newly complete and just about approved for approximately $67,000 with a monthly payment around 1480. You may also see a couple of additional term options available if you log into your loan portal where you can review and select your offer if you’ve already received it. If you’re still looking to finalize this loan, give us a call back at 855-909-0847 and ask for the funding review unit. Again, that number is 855-909-0847.”

Starting in fall 2025, we began receiving Medicare MSN notices for medical devices we do not use or need. Different companies, and usually urinary catheters. Last one covered a period of 6 months, but only one MSN at the end of the year. We call to report fraud; wait on hold; Medicare appears to appreciate; but they continue to pay!

And Minnesota has a Fraud problem?

I get the same about my “loan”.

Tonight, I received a call from my Credit Union stating that my debit card had been compromised. The phone number showing was my Credit Union’s number. This person said that someone had wanted to purchase something using my debit card. They gave the name of the person and the store that supposedly was used. They tried to get me to give them my debit card # and I kept saying that he already had it. I never gave it to him.

There was also a charge on my credit card purchases that I didn’t make.

So, tonight as I am lying in bed, I started to get nervous about it and called the Credit Union and talked to a representative about it. She said that there was no fraud report. So, this person was trying to get my debit card info. Fortunately, I didn’t give him the number. This is so scary.

What really started to get me thinking was that the individual was not concerned about the credit card charge. (It was a legit charge but showed up as clothing from Marks and Spenser’s instead of my eye doctor for my new glasses.)

Now, I hope that I can get to sleep. I may have to go to the insomniac thread!

The other day I had a phone appt with a financial adviser with my IRA account for noon. At 12:02 the phone rings but says ‘Scam Likely’ but because I was expecting the call I answered and it was indeed the financial adviser. I told him that the number says Scam Likely and he was not concerned. I told him I only answered because I was expecting the call but that it was concerning and that in the future I wouldn’t answer. He still didn’t care.

Wow, he should care if people don’t pick up his calls! I never pick up “Spam” calls.

OK, here’s a question for you all – this has been bothering me for several years now.

The other day I received a call from my medical insurance company. I know it was them; I had been expecting a call from them. They asked if it was VeryHappy on the line and I said yes. Then they asked me to provide my date of birth to confirm that it really was me. I said I would NOT provide them with that; they called me, and I wasn’t going to provide it to someone who called me. I told them I had no idea if they were really the insurance company or someone trying to scam me.

The same thing happened a year or two ago when the mammogram place called me; it had been a year since my last mammo and did I want to schedule the next one? Sure, I said. Then provide us with your DOB. I declined; we were able to make the appointment without my providing that info.

In both situations, I was able to prove to them that I really am who I said I am by providing them with my address and phone, so we were able to proceed. But it seems to me that when I receive an incoming call, I should not be providing my DOB to them.

What do you all think??

Yeah, I wouldn’t give that over the phone. They can find me by my address. The only people I give my DOB to are pharmacies, in person.

RIGHT—if caller ID says Spam, or Likely Spam, we never pick up–if the caller is legit I assume they will leave a message.
