<p>I would rather be remembered as the man who ran a summer reading program for immigrant children in my crime ridden neighborhood while instructing in both Spanish and Creole than the machine that scored a 2350 on the first try. Essentially, all I’m trying to say is that URMs from low socioeconomic backgrounds have unique qualities about them that make them attractive to elite colleges. URM status helps, but not to the outrageous limits that people often like to think. Academic Credentials expand to GPA, course rigor and rank as well. URM admits are more often than not top 10 in their classes while taking the most demanding classes offered in their schools.</p>

I’ve had to witness and overcome a number of “intangible” obstacles that cannot be articulated in a neat little list (i.e. violent home invasions, robberies, etc.) due in part, to living in a low-income, crime-ridden area. Yet, I still somehow managed to emerge from the rubble. </p>
<p>While a 2300+ SAT score is a noble and worthy feat, so is a 1900 SAT score with the distraction of famine, deprivation, and poverty.</p>

<p>I empathize with you babytitain … I’ve gone through similar drastic life experiences also, like being faced with the decision to drop out of high school so I would be able to work to sustain my large family in my one bedroom apt. with my father in jail. Unfortunately, our stories have little volume, or value for that matter, to society and our achievements, despite our adversities, are looked upon as less than and then we’re ridiculed for “asking for handouts” from the universities we attend.*</p>
<p>If it’s one thing I’m learning about this country, it’s that people can’t accept a URM with a low socioeconomic status trying to mobilize through the ranks. We will continue to be AA cases, with all of the merit we’ve garnered, by working just as hard, if not harder than a lot of other people our age, stripped from our names.</p>

and that article is the exact reason why I disagree with racial affirmative and fully support a socioeconomic perspective instead. Now that I think about it, it makes sense for that working class whites are in fact the URMs.
