For Ma1a, Ch1a and Ph1a, the sections are generally assigned based of diagnostic/placement exam results. Usually, Section 1 of these courses is for those who have had no previous exposure to their respective subjects (or did horribly on their placement exams).
A section number > 1 means you’re not in the “no previous exposure” section;
and usually the highest numbered section (say 15 out of 15 total sections) is usually for those who did exceptionally well, but each class (Ma1a, Ch1a, and Ph1a) has a different number of total sections so it’s harder to tell if you are indeed placed in the highest numbered section. </p>
