Scholarships for Smart Kids with parents that make too much money...What am I missing?

Based on everything you have shared, it seems like Purdue will be a good choice.

Like I said earlier, I share your pain. This is a tough process.

@mom2collegekids doesn’t the UAB scholarship cover full tuition…even at the OOS rate? What would.the balance of the bill be for this student at UAB…given her stats? I doubt that it’s $21,000 a year.

Iris Shen-Van Buren was the admissions counselor for Ohio. I am not sure if she handles Indiana, as well. She is based out of the Detroit Outreach Admissions Office. Possible contacts:

germanr@msu.edu Dr. German. Assistant Dean of the Honors College

Brough@msu.edu Glenn Brough. Assistant Director of Admissions

You should contact them directly if you might be interested. MSU is a large place and general inquiries might get bounced around to different people.

It isn’t though. I’m not going to go back and forth on this but even if a scholarship has a need component, having need does not mean “poor.”

At least not real poor. Maybe CC poor where 100k income is often considered “low-ish income.”

IDK how MS State waives in-state/OOS for high stat students, and awards full tuition scholarship. Worth calling. We know students with your DDs stats that got full tuition plus from OOS.

IDK if the UAB option might be better in the long run over some of the others - depending. Calling to see what is a possibility there might be worthwhile to decide about completing application/scholarship stuff. I don’t think it will be much time. Might be a good answer, depending.

UAH is still an option for full tuition scholarship. As another student said - they have active sports, so opportunities for getting involved with pre-PT type activities.

It depends if the direct entry 3 + 3 programs are affordable for the family.

I do sympathize that some good opportunities and even chances for a nice scholarship were missed.

College is a paradigm that can change year to year, and can be varied for the UG major and aspirations.

Indiana Wesleyan is an NAIA school so there may be track scholarship money depending on your daughter’s stats. My son graduated from there and played baseball. Love IWU!

jumpermom. she met with the coach and loved him. he seemed interested in her but didn’t say we’d love to have you and give you some scholarship money…

and she was able to get in-state tuition at all but one of the schools she was accepted to. How? She wrote a nice letter and asked for it. That simple.

Oh good heavens!!! This does not happen in many/most states! Which states were these and when did this happen?

In many/most states there are rules/req’ts regarding instate residency for tuition that go above the heads of school employees.

Also…the devil is often in the details. Perhaps she was given a scholarship that covered the OOS portion so she only had to pay instate. THAT would be a VERY different situation.

@shermizzle Are you talking about GRAD school?

OP- D2 just graduated from U of E as a DPT, and D3 is in her second year of PT. The direct admit and the fact that the scholarship money goes through all 6 years is a huge factor to consider. They did have to live in campus housing for the first 4 years, but some of that is in apartments or houses. The last years they were able to find fairly inexpensive off-campus housing. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

@greeninohio Your MSU information is not accurate any more.

@shermizzle your niece may have had high stats and was very fortunate to get DPT as in-state student (which is graduate school). Those programs, depending on student supply and funding availability, may not be offering this option for students 2/3/4 years down the road.

Money is tightening at many public universities for OOS students as UGs. We have seen this from friends’ students who have received either in-state rates or some scholarship money, to none offered in later years.
