Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2019-2020

Got a silver key for my art portfolio and one silver key for one of my individuals. Kinda disappointing honestly. My last year!

Two gold keys, a silver key and an Honorable Mention!

@Lunarlitgend

thank you! a national medal would be crazy, tbh i’d be incredibly surprised. you deserve national golds for both of your pieces as well! good luck in the next round :heart:

Two gold, four silver, and an honourable mention! Ayyyyy

My daughter got a gold key for her writing portfolio and a silver key for a poem. YAY!

Congratulations to everyone!

Anyone know when they post the list of the gold key winners?

Is it a thing where Scholastic does not award over 2 gold keys to anyone? Nobody in my region-at-large or anyone on this sub has gotten 2+ either.

i know @phanakin got… I think six? Last year I got 4. So no @NoShotsThrown

Does anyone have any experience with the SAS program application? What’s the likelihood of getting a scholarship? Have any of you ever received one? If so, to what summer program(s)?

@inflorescent Yeah actually! I applied last year and won the SAS/full ride scholarship to Kenyon! It was honestly the best experience of my life. Are there any specific questions you have about the application? Maybe I can help :slight_smile:

@Lunarlitgend Wow, congrats! I think I’m just more curious about the process overall. So far, I’m listing Kenyon, Iowa, and the Stanford Summer Humanities Institute (since I’ve already applied there) as my top 3 choices. Do you know how common it is to receive a scholarship? Are they always full-rides for are some of them partial? Thanks so much!

@inflorescent Thank you! And that list sounds awesome! I really hope you get into them :smiley:

And I don’t think it’s that common. I heard the process I very selective, I know last year there were about 1,100+ applicants. They didn’t say how many got the scholarship but I think it was only a few. Some got partial and some got full rides. I guess it depends on how well the applicants portfolio is ?

@Lunarlitgend Thank you so much! And good luck if you’re applying again this year ?

@inflorescent You’re welcome! :smiley:
And thank you but I don’t qualify this year because I’m a senior :joy:

Does anyone know what the chances are of winning a national gold medal?

@phanakin @wistfulwords Woah, y’all are legends.

Out of curiosity, how many pieces did you guys submit?

@galactoc Roughly the top 1% of all gold key entries receive national gold medals.

hi guys!! I got a gold key & American Voices nomination this year. It’s my first time ever submitting something, so I’m over the moon!! Considering applying for the SAS because I really want to do a writing camp, but it says it’s heavily need-based… I don’t think I’d qualify for need-based, though, so I’m kind of torn on whether I should apply or not. Would it be bad to apply to the scholarship even if you probably won’t be considered for need?

@starstray CONGRATS! You should apply. There’s nothing to lose :slight_smile:

I’m looking at the American Voices awards for Massachusetts and I’m scared b/c they’re mostly personal essays. I’m in the short story category :frowning:

welp, im fricked
