My sister runs one for my nephew’s school, and she “forgets” to unpack the crates with the worst of the junk.

There are other companies that offer school book fairs with much, much higher quality books and little to none of the junk. Not at all a fan of Scholastic’s.

I think that the quality of the books offered by Scholastic has gone down over the years. I began looking at Scholastic flyers over 15 years ago and bought quite a few books from them. Mostly non-fiction books that I could use in homeschooling my children. Now I notice far fewer of the kinds of books that I used to buy and it seems to me that the number of ‘junk’ books is much, much higher than it used to be which is just so sad to me.

As my kids got older and I began to look more and more at the books geared for older kids and I really was not impressed. Yes, there were always a few Newberry Award books, but the rest of the offerings tended to be less than great literature. Sigh.

I used to LOVE the scholastic book sale! That was always one of my favorite days to go to school! Do they still have those thin papers that they send home every month or so where you can purchase books during non book fair time? I remember signing up for their baby sitters club program. Every month they mailed me three books and a small gift (book mark, stickers, etc).

We have a book fair that comes to my work about twice a year - Called [Books Are Fun](http://www.booksarefun.com/) They usually have a nice selection of items and are very reasonably priced. I do quite a bit of Christmas Shopping at their fair before the holidays. We are having one next week so I’ll be sure to stop by.
