School does not supply toilet paper

To citygirlsmom: easier said than done when you have a suite of freshmen from out-of-state with no cars and the nearest stores not within walking distance away. Perhaps once they get the opportunity to meet more friends who may have cars, then they can go to the nearest Target/Walmart to purchase these types of things. In the meantime, they have to make do, or in our case, we will purchase some necessities this weekend when she is home and bring them back on Sunday. I still feel it is unusual for the bathroom NOT to have any kinds of hooks or towel racks installed. Thanks, though, for your “recommendation”.

um it isnt that hard to order something on line for a group of adults

guess I think students are capable enough to figure stuff out and to make spaces functional

allie’smom - you might be able to find some of the kind that hook over the door. (Make sure they still allow the door to close.) When I was in college, we didn’t have towel bars, either. I remember using suction cup ones, but it was hard to find a smooth surface. Over the door hooks or bars would be easier.

Also, many stores - Target, WalMart, BB&B, IKEA, etc, have online sites. Since our kids all went out of state to school, we have come to rely on mail-order for forgotten things.

also, the post office has those priority mail boxes that take two days and cost 9 bucks…small, but amazing what can go in them

and I don’t know, if I was rooming with a bunch of people I didn’t know who had friends in and such, leaving my towels for anyone to use would be kind of icky to me

just a thought

When I was an upperclassman at college, I shared a dorm bathroom with only four other people. It wasn’t really a suite situation, but it might as well have been. It was the top floor of an isolated tower, with only one double and one triple; nobody ever ventured up there except the five of us and our friends (and the janitor – since it wasn’t really a suite). We all kept our toiletries in the bathroom in individual buckets, and nothing was ever lost or stolen. But nobody left towels in there, and we wouldn’t have done so even if there were towel racks. There wouldn’t have been room for five towels in our one toilet/one shower/two sink bathroom.

jsut an idea of the portable options in various prices ranges

All good suggestions and she has tried several of them already. Shipping from online to school - we had a bad experience with that already. Ordered her a shelf unit from BBB, and when it had not arrived in 3 weeks, she finally was able to track it down - sitting alone in the mailroom for 2 weeks without them notifying her that she had a package. Also, the bathroom is only accessible from inside the suite, and I just find it odd that there aren’t any preexisting shelves or towel racks. H will have a fit if we spend any more $$ on things like this, but I intend to bring her shopping this weekend for a bathroom rug, toilet seat cover, and other things. He feels that they should share the costs of things like this, but after a month of not having them, I’m afraid that’s not going to happen. Sometimes it’s just easier to do it yourself. Many, MANY years ago, I lived in what was then considered luxury on-campus apartments at BC. We paid exactly the same as the traditional dorms, but had 3 bedrooms, a full kitchen, dining room, living room, and TWO complete baths WITH towel racks and a linen closet (LOL!) It was so much better than the first apartment I lived in when I graduated and had a job! I certainly want her to be independent and learn to deal with things herself, but the Mom in me wants her to be comfortable, too. So, while she is still adjusting to her new independence, I think we’ll do what we do best - SHOP! Now, way too much time spent on toilet paper/bathroom discussions -back to the real world and my 7 freshmen who are struggling to divide a whole number by a two-digit divisor! Thanks again for the suggestions and the link. I’ll have to check it out.

I live in a suite that gets cleaned and is provided with TP. The TP is the cheap single layer stuff though–which is especially inadequate after a big meal at the on campus dining hall :P

I usually supplement the TP supply myself, but its nice to have around if I cant make it to the store right away.

I must say, that CC seems to cover everything and even gets to the “bottom” of what matters.

Sooz—LOL!:D

I live in an on-grounds apartment at UVA and we’re required to supply toilet paper/lightbulbs/cleaning supplies/etc. I think the thing about TP is that the school doesn’t want to pay for and supply the paper, then kids use it to prank someone/something. That’s my best guess.

You’re kidding, right?

The dorms at my son’s college are really inexpensive. The college does not clean the bathrooms in the suites. As far as I’m concerned it’s a great trade-off.

WASHDAD: And why would I be kidding?? Doesn’t the bathroom in your house have a rug and seat cover?? Ours does, and I don’t see anything wrong with her buying things that makes their dorm living situation more comfortable. She is coming home for the weekend, and YES, I am taking her shopping for a few more things. Not quite sure what your problem with that is??? Oh, and don’t your floors get really cold out there in Washington State in the winter? Here in the Northeast they sure do, particularly when they are just made of linoleum. I’m sorry that you seem to be offended or amused by my post. Perhaps I should stop contributing to these conversations, which is too bad, because I have found that CC has been a very friendly place to be and I have found lots of nice people on it and great information that has helped in the college admissions process. BTW - just talked to her and we don’t have to buy the seat cover - there is no lid on their commode, so I guess we’ll buy two rugs instead - one for in front of the sink and one for in front of the shower stall!!

Allie’smom…when both my girls had a private style bathroom in their dorms shared by just four girls, they also had bathmats that someone bought (some bought one thing, others bought another, that sort of thing). Pretty common for a private style bathroom to have in college. Maybe boys/men don’t care? I have no idea. But your story is pretty typical from my vantage point.

After reading this toilet paper thread, I am afraid to open the thread in this cafe that is titled…“Icky but…” :D

Sounds like standard practice to me. It certainly was the case in suites at Harvard back when I was in college in the 1970s.

OK…
I’m finding this the perfect opportunity to put in a plug for my son’s dorm at UF. Hume.

The kids do not have to clean their own toilets or provide their own tp.

So all you people in CC land, c’mon down and enjoy!

I have to confess that there is a mat in front of the shower, but never – since moving out of my mother’s house in 1976 – have I or anyone in my family owned a toilet seat cover. I only have a bath mat because WashMom likes them – an old towel works for me. And I doubt that my mother ever knew or cared whether I had a toilet seat cover or whether I paid for my own toilet paper. I don’t think there is anything wrong with your relationship with your daughter, either. Heaven knows, I’m more of a helicopter than either one of my parents.

why do you need a seat cover? I find them annoying and actually they can be unsanitary when you think about it

if no pretty seat cover, you can SEE if some guy’s aim was off, but with a seat cover, the spray can get into the material

blech

When I met my H he was in grad school. He shared an apartment with three other guys. He could not leave ANYTHING in the bathroom that he shared with one of the guys. This guy would use his towel or his TOOTHBRUSH if he left it in there. Once the room mate ran out of underware and took a pair of my H’s out of his drawer. H would never have known, but “Tom” thru them on the floor of H’s room after he was done with them. He didn’t wash them, just chucked them on the floor and they were a pair that he never wore. H asked “Tom” if they were his and the roomie admitted to taking them and tossing them!
A friend of mine got crabs from her room mate using her towel… Don’t leave them in the bathroom.
