Both of our kids took piano as a second instrument…and they had fabulous teachers who understood that piano wasn’t their primary instrument. But then, our kids really enjoyed their piano lessons…so it wasn’t a burden to them to practice for their weekly lessons.
But back to your original question. If your student is playing in a precollege orchestra, takes private lessons, etc…then I would not worry about playing in the school orchestra.
