Schools known for good merit aid

Totally understand if you don’t want to answer but is solidly middle class like $100k, $150k, $200k, more? I feel like when people say middle class it varies so much.

Even if you were comfortable messaging me.

How can you get UofAZ for $22k when their merit seems to be $32000?

I don’t think we know 2024/25 tuition yet - but current tuition for Arizona OOS is $41K, books estimated $800 (seems high today but I suppose it’s major dependent) and housing $14.4K.

So if you do the math - it’s about that - maybe a tad higher - but we don’t know next year’s tuition. Of course, when one moves off campus, they may or may not find cheaper expenses.

One nice thing about Arizona is that they lock the tuition (at least have in the past) all four years.

They also typically provide an up front one time scholarship to - at least did to both my kids - one $2K but I think today they are $1K.

The school’s COA includes miscellaneous and travel, etc. but of course that varies by student - but just the basics, for a student with the top merit, maybe not $22K - but for 2023, not far above.

U of A is ending the locked in tuition starting in I believe fall 2025. So if you’re entering the university in fall 2025 or onward, when tuition goes up annually, your own tuition will as well. No longer locked in for the same price for all 4 yr.

I’m a National Scholar so I got a bonus 3k.

That’s awesome. I thought the max was what is written for the auto merit which I think is 32.

That is auto merit- so if you deduct that from the charges above - the $41K $800, and $14.4K - that brings you mid 20s - and the student who said $22K said she gets another $3K for national merit.

The assumption is tuition is going up next year; who knows maybe merit is going down…no one knows yet - but the school has a huge deficit they need to work on closing.

At the same time, as a state flagship and universally respected university, they need to keep their stature in society.

It will be interesting to see what actions they ultimately take.

By solidly middle class, I’m referring to $145k AGI for family of four, living in an expensive city. Essentially solidly in the top 35% of American households.

My s24 was offered significant merit awards at
Fordham 34.5k after award, 4 years approx 240k
Rochester 23.5k after award 4 years approx 260k
UConn 7.5k after award 4 years approx. 140k
McGill- no $$$ but tuition is 6k a year for citizens- 4 year approx. 95k

It’s 4/29 and he’s still undecided. We’d cover whichever he chooses but he’s having trouble (as do I ) rationalizing spending 240 or 260k when he can go to 4 years of college at a well recognized and competitive school for under 100k.

I suggest you create your own thread in the Compare College Offers forum so this question is noticed. Best of luck!

Congrats on all the great acceptances.

Have your son visited all schools? It will come down to fits, since he will be spending the next four years there. Personally, I think both Uconn and McGills are good options, but for McGill, you will also need to add in the cost travel, insurance, etc …

Question, why McGill? It’s in another country and I assume you live in CT and getting in-state rate for UConn.

For Canadian citizens, McGill, and other Canadian universities are a bargain. McGill tuition and fees for Canadian is about $8000 a year. McGill is drivable, plus there’s a train. Airfare is reasonable as well. Insurance costs are minimal

McGill is inexpensive and living in Montreal is thrilling but it means having the maturity, as an American 18 year old, to be treated as an American 21 year old and act like it - much less hand holding, less opportunity to change your mind academically, intense studying with stringent grading criteria where a 70 is a B and a 55 passing, and fewer than 15% get an A (though since Covid the grade distribution has been much more generous than in the past: ~35% get an A- and another 35% get a B.)

Was merit at Fordham from national merit scholarship? Do you mind saying your kid’s test scores? Was Connecticut merit or needs? Thanks so much, my daughter is interested in both of these but wasn’t going to apply because she didn’t see brining the cost down. Right now her SATs are around 1400 though.

I have seen no official announcement that the U Az $32k merit will be reduced starting in 2025-26. Please reply if you know differently.

So you mean those applying to start in 2025 that will no longer be at that level?

Looks like they made the reduction.

That is a crazy amount of a reduction! Are current students grandfathered?
