Schools offering scholarships to Spring Admit Freshmen?

The OP mentioned community college as an alternative, not as a first choice. And, there is no mention by OP in this thread of how much aid is being sought. This is the OP’s primary question:

I wanted to know if there are any schools at all that offer aid to freshmen starting in the Spring.

I answered that question accurately, based on the information provided by OP.

EFC: ~1200

i am looking for a school that would offer me a fair amount of money, say 15%-33% (I realize 33% is a bit high for my GPA, just figured it would be best to include a high end) covered through scholarships, for I plan on applying for a TEACH grant, PELL grant, and Federal loans in addition.

@xAtlasx

You don’t “apply” for a Pell Grant. It is awarded based on your FAFSA EFC. If your EFC is $1200, your Pellfor a full year would be $4500 or so. So for a semester, it would be half that amount assuming you went to school full time.

Your federal loans would be limited to $5500 for the year. If you go full time the second term, you can get the full $5500 for the 2016-2017 year for that term.

What is a TEACH grant?

What are your instate public options? Does your state have any grant programs for low income students?

@thumper1 you do fill out a FAFSA application though, which is what meant.

TEACH grant is a grant for prospective teachers and is tied to the Pell grant grant you are awarded. If I get $4500 in a Pell grant, I would get about $4000 a year from the TEACH grant.

In addition, my home state of Illinois does have a grant called the MAP grant which is tied to the Pell grant maximum for the school year set by the Department of Education. I do qualify for one, but Illinois schools haven’t distributed them yet due to the uncertainty of funding for the program. It has not been cancelled or discontinued, they just tell us not to rely on it or assume we will get it.

Yes. If you are going to start college in January 2017, you would complete the 2016-2017 FAFSA and submit it to colleges where you apply.

That FAFSA is available now. Just be careful to choose the correct FAFSA when you go to compete it because the 2017-2018 FAFSA is also available for completion. That one will be used for the 2017-2018 academic year.

In your case, I would submit both of those FAFSA forms…because presumably the four year college you enroll in for January 2017 will be the same college you will be at for the 2017-2018 school year.

Both of these use the 2015 tax year information.

Find out if you can start the education major in the spring, in case you need certain classes and they need to be taken at certain times.

Apply for FALL semester, NOT spring.

Spend spring working/saving money that you’ll need!

Fair amount of money 15-33%??? How would you pay the rest???

How much will your parents pay each year?

You need to find a school that will give you 80%+

What is your major and career goal? teaching?

How much is IL MAP grant? Is it assured?

Apply to DePauw…often give good aid.

IL publics are nasty expensive.

Is there an IL public that you can commute to??

Hopefully someone can suggest some IL publics that are lower cost AND will give you some merit to supplement need aid

I would suggest Western Illinois University. Good teacher education programs…and way less expensive than UIUC.

How about SIU? Maybe you would qualify for one of their scholarships?

Not sure if the question about federal grants was directed to me, but I received exactly the same pell and seog grant that I would if I had applied for fall.

Pell grants are a right, so you would get the same “half award” for the semester. SEOG isnt’ assured, so can’t depend on that.

State aid, like MAP, may also be awarded (if the program is still funded).

As for other “free” dollars…it’s less likely a student like this one would get what’s needed as a spring admit.
