Schools similar to Ohio State and University of Michigan that have lower average stats?

That’s true. But what I was saying was that with the two scholarships (Midwest exchange program and the merit one) it still won’t be able to add up together, right?

I’ll call. Thanks!!! @intparent

@equationlover sorry for the delay. Drove 4 hours for parents weekend or let’s be real. I wanted to go to the Penn state VS Michigan game and my son just happened to go here… Lol… Anyway… I don’t know about those schools but there is an engineering part of CC. They are extremely helpful and know a lot about schools and engineering in general. Very helpful people. Check it out.

@TTG Opps, I meant to tag you in post #38, not intparent.

I was going to come and say Iowa State too. Lovely traditional campus. Big university experience. Excellent academics. Affordable!

U of MN actually has similar stats Ohio State. And very high in some schools (business, engineering, bio sciences).

@MusakParent U of MN unfortunately doesn’t give out much aid. I LOVE U of MN though.

Yes, I’ve heard great things about Iowa State.

I am U of MN alum and I totally agree! Go Goldy Gopher!

I have a sibling who is an Iowa State alum who had a fantastic experience there and actually just spoke to another very happy recent grad. I think that’s a great choice for what you’re looking for!

Thanks! @MusakParent

Yes, I do really like U of Mn, but the unfortunately thing is it’s way too expensive OOS. And they don’t give out much aid.

Update: I sent emails to U Kansas and U Nebraska-Lincoln asking about their scholarships and if they can be stacked. If they can, then these would be pretty viable options for OOS.

I’m hoping that the two George Beadle scholarships are different. It classifies one as the MWEP one and the other as the same amount but different criteria (29 ACT.)

University of Kansas said they do not participate in MWEP, so that is off the table. Waiting on response from U Nebraska.

@Eeyore123 why is this bad advice? Many students transfer into and out of lsa and engineering. It has nothing to do if they want to be an engineer. There are many reasons a student would start and then transfer. The first year curriculum is basically the same if a lsa students decides they want to transfer. There is one English class that is different and one other class that is made up through lsa classes. Look at the cross campus transfer requirements. The engineering students take most of their first year to some second year classes with the lsa students anyway.

I never said it was optimal. I am only speaking about Michigan not any other schools. At another school it might not be so easy to transfer in.

@Knowsstuff I contacted the guy for engineering and he said that he could not help me re: if it was realistic or not. He did say that my math score was a bit low, and that all students who apply for Michigan engineering must have taken calculus before college. He said though that my ACT score was not the only factor that determines how strong you are at math: he said that they look at how hard of math classes you have taken, ECT. He said nothing about how failing a math course was going to look to admissions, even if it was for a medical reason.

Well now you have some more information to base your decision on. I think you have seen this :

https://www.engin.umich.edu/about/facts/

Keep in mind also. Michigan is a math centric school. They pride themselves on their Calculus/math curriculum. They do expect most to start at Calculus 1 though. It is also a very hard school. Basic classes that you took in high school are nothing compared to the classes at Michigan. One reason they like to see you can handle the rigorous classes at your school. They told us a few years back expect at least a full grade drop till you adjust but that might be fair of any program.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln responded and said that they would like to have my ID (I haven’t applied yet though.) Should I tell them I haven’t applied yet? But am just wondering?

Your mixing up applying to the college VS just logging in and making an account. Once you do that you will get an ID. Making an account also shows interest. So make one at other schools you are seriously interested in.

Ohhh okay. Thanks for the info

@Knowsstuff You’re right. It’s like Iowa States’s app where everything is self reported.

Update to everyone following this thread: got accepted into U Nebraska

Hey, equationlover, I am feeling so happy for you! Pretty sure I was the first to suggest both Iowa State and Nebraska to you. I have gotten so much great advice here on CC and it feels good to be able to share my tiny bit of expertise on the site. Just had a hunch that these would be good academic and financial options for you. Nice to have two in the bag, I bet!

I was impressed when I was through there last year! As I noted in a previous comment, it’s really an urban campus. Students seemed great. Congratulations!

Just noticed that you posted asking for suggestions a week ago (Halloween) and have two new apps and acceptances already! Impressed–obviously a woman of action!
