Was UDelaware diverse? My S and I need to visit this summer.
@pct3 it was sort of hard to tell, given that school wasn’t in session. However, there were tons of students there (freshman orientation), and we saw several dozen students who were there taking summer classes. There appeared to be quite a bit of diversity among the students we saw, and among the tour guides. When I got home I looked it up on college results and found it’s 73% white- that doesn’t sound very diverse to me.
Ohio University, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisville.
Perhaps UConn , Pitt, Syracuse, SUNY Buffalo
Tennessee, Kentucky, Towson, Richmond.
@mom24boys I hadn’t heard that about Montgomery and Howard counties for UMD in-state admission. Any insight on applying from Prince George’s county? It is D19’s top choice and I would love to see her there. Thanks!
NC State
Rutgers
George Washington
Miami Ohio
U Conn
East Carolina
For your kid’s bare-bones back-up plan, check out the articulation agreements between Howard CC and UMCP. Here in Montgomery County, lots of students start at Montgomery College and then transfer. There even is a program where MC students can start taking classes at UMCP part-time. I wouldn’t be suprised if something like that exists for Howard CC.
College of Charleston.
I’m reading this thread with interest since I have a S19 who will likely end up with similar stats and looking at the same schools. (He doesn’t want to be more than 4-6 hours from home and would probably be fine with anything further away than George Mason).
We’re in the DC Metro area, but in NoVA. According to Naviance, S19 has a better chance to get into Maryland with his current 3.83 WGPA and (likely) 1400+ SAT than he does to get into VA Tech (I’d rather pay in-state tuition!)
@STF4717 I was interested to hear that your kid thought Penn State was way too big but OSU wasn’t. Now I’m curious to visit Ohio State because I always assumed it would be even larger in comparison to University Park (granted I haven’t been back to Penn State since I graduated 20 years ago!)
@DeltaMom2019 Here is what the policy is: "Under the Maryland Higher Education Commission guidelines, students who have met the minimum standard of a 2.0 GPA (Grade Point Average) are eligible for general admission to four year colleges or universities that are part of the University of Maryland System on a space available basis. This guideline does not include selective or limited enrollment programs such as business administration, computer science, engineering, teacher education and other limited programs found on these campuses.
Institutions may delay your enrollment by a semester until space becomes available. This information should be provided within your letter."
So…no guarantees a kid from a Maryland community college (at least from Howard Comm College) can get in to UMD.
@eh1234 We didn’t visit Penn State- I was the one who thought it was too big. Big schools don’t bother my kiddo…?Ohio State was a hit, mostly because the town was so nice. I don’t think we’ll bother with Penn State since UDelaware was a hit!
U Maine has a flagship match program https://go.umaine.edu/apply/scholarships/flagship-match/
@mommdc We were JUST talking about that yesterday. We have a lot of family in Maine, and I was teasing my son that I’d send him to Fort Kent!
@STF4717 - That is interesting. Howard CC doesn’t post much detail about its articulation agreements. This is what I could find. http://www.howardcc.edu/admissions-aid/apply-for-admission/advising/transfer-center/Articulation_Agreements.html Frustratingly, that just refers to ARTSYS again and again. http://www.artsys.usmd.edu/
I had expected Howard CC to have a list of the current agreements like this one from MC http://cms.montgomerycollege.edu/agreements/ Unfortunately, Howard CC doesn’t currently participate in MTAP which also pretty guarantees transfer into UMUC. Paying out-of-county fees, and commuting to one of the MD CCs that participates could be worth it. http://www.admissions.umd.edu/apply/mtap.php
Check out UGA. I went to Maryland Undergrad and Georgia for my MBA. Maryland is my daughter’s (18) top choice but UGA is a close second. Sounds like she has all the same criteria for selecting a school as your son and has the same SAT so far with a bit higher GPA.
Georgia is a simple flight from DC and has ample transportation options from Hartsfield to Athens. Might not be as diverse as Maryland but should do the trick.
Go Terps and Dawgs!!
@STF4717 I think you meant to tag @happymomof1
My question is for @Mom24boys about admission stats/chances of a student from Prince Georges county in comparison to Howard and Montgomery counties. Thanks!
@DeltaMom2019 - I expect that the guidance counselors in PG county should have some notion about any differences. A lot of this is also going to be program/high school specific.
Have you looked at Temple?
@happymomof1 DD19’s GC is great, but not quite as plugged in to UMD as I had hoped. Naviance gives us a good idea of where she needs to be in comparison to other girls from her school (private, all-girls), but I had not heard much about differences between counties, so I was curious. I would imagine that it is also a simple numbers issue with maybe trying to balance the in-state freshman class? Regardless, I’m hoping for the best for her. She would be an Education major, which is not impacted, so fingers crossed.
