Schools to consider? [HS junior at beginning of search - 4.0 UW, MechE] [MD resident, <$60k]

One thing. Michigan State would give you the honors college. They also have a nice approach to engineering. You would also get like half tuition with study abroad grants and mentorship etc. It’s a very good school that gets overlooked with great outcomes.

From MD -Moco or metro DC?
No way. We have so many magnets and top students applying. Almost all are not accepted.

Not target or reach. SUPER Super Super reach from DMV area!
Kids with 4.0, top magnet load and 1600SAT are on waitlist in hundreds!

Well our 8 years of robotics kids says differently. Maybe they have a particular affinity for FIRST kids. Or different states are different - just sharing our experience

Yep. Different states are different. I had robotics legacy kid who got in only from waitlist in Covid year. There were 30 kids in her magnet class on waitlist. School got record 4 students attending that year, only because of Covid. She was only female and only legacy.
You can imagine that probably half of waitlisted kids were from robotics team.

It’s a good data point. I didn’t realize other states were so competitive - we have pretty much universal positive results - again these are high stats kids. I’m not sure 30 kids were at the same level as them, so am not suggesting it’s a safety - just safer than MIT for kids who have the stats for it. 2

Look at Gatech forum. You will get a different picture. Some students are accepted to MIT and flat denied at Gatech. Do you know about GA mandate to give most seats to GA students? There are not enough seats in whole Gatech for all top students from DMV :grinning:.
BTW , I would never consider MIT for my daughter (or myself, with 2 degrees from GT).

Points made about GT. Please take any further back and forth to PM.

Thank you.

Yes, MIT is the Yogi Berra of Mechanical Engineering. Nobody goes there anymore because it’s too popular.

Clemson, UDel and Miami of Ohio. All have engineering not sure of the specific areas you daughter is interested in.

NC State? Pitt? There’s cross registration with CMU.

Moco (she goes to NW)

Thanks for this–I will encourage her to look at MSU as well. I agree with those of you suggesting a balanced list. I think what’s most important to her in terms of the program itself is hands-on opportunities, creative options, exposure to different elements of ME, etc. Yes, prestige in program is nice and certainly an ego-boost, but I think in the end she will want to be where she isn’t in a pressure cooker competing against other students, rather collaborating with them.

NP. Msu has an interesting program and get hands on early. But program’s like Purdue are known also for their co-op type learning programs.

Just look at what the schools offer instead of the name of the school. Some schools are known pressure cookers and some aren’t but knowing students at those schools they will tell you they are also collaborative also. This is why “fit” is so important. Engineering is tough pretty much anywhere. Some schools have better opportunities. You want it to be Abet accredited but the school cultures will be different. All depends on what you want out of the Undergraduate experience.

Exactly. My husband is an Architectural Engineer (Penn State) and works as a structural engineer. It’s helpful to have that in terms of understanding programs and also what companies are looking for after graduation (even if it’s a different field of engineering). She may very well land at Penn State, which would be totally fine, however we want her to feel like she’s able to make that choice freely, not because of familiarity. (It is a little cult like, LOL) I agree that it’s all about fit, and until you’ve seen some different programs, it’s hard to know what that might look like.

My daughter went to school about 2000 miles from her hs, and there were two kids from her kindergarten class with her, one in her dorm, the other (a life long friend) in her sorority. They’d all gone to K about 150 miles from the school. The next year another student from her hs also went to this school. It was sometimes comforting to see a couple of familiar faces in those early weeks.

I’d also recommend applying to UMd and any other big schools she likes. She can always tell them no.
