Do you have a store called Value City in your town? I picked up an xlong jersey sheet set for $7.99 the week of July 4. Bed, bath and beyond has them for $9.99. You can usually find a coupon for either 20% or $5 off in the mail or the newspaper for Bed Bath and Beyond. Target’s price is currently around $20-- wait for a sale. They will probably come down to about $12-15.

The Wamsutta outlet here in PA have XL twin sheets for $4.99

Throw the Campus Linens flyer in the trash!! Not worth the money!!

Hrm. I’m starting to feel the onset of laziness. Should I buy things individually or buy a “Bed-in-a-Bag” set… does it make a difference?

DOes your bed in a bag dome with XL sheets as most only have regluar twin sheets?

Depending on what you want, the bed in a bag can be a bargain, sometimes it is cheaper to get them as separates. Last year we ordered sheets at JCP online because we like colors. Even paid the $5 for monogramming. Purchased an inexpensive comforter and got some duvet covers to give her a change of pace.

I think a bed-in-a-bag set may include some things you won’t use-dust ruffle, pillow sham, etc. Be sure to check what comes in the set. Not all include sheets either.

Hi, Andrew:

Regardless of where you are now, you will have access to super discounts once you get to Georgetown…just walk across the bridge into Rosslyn (VA)…about a 1/2-mile walk; hop on the Metro …you’ll have lots of choices on where to go…I suggest Orange Line to East Falls Church Metro…1/2 to 1 mile up Roosevelt St (the street you exit on to) there are several discount stores where you will find bedding at 1/2 or less the price in the Campus Linens brochures…if you want more “shopping opportunity input” in the DC area, PM me…I live here (2 miles from the aforementioned EFC metro stop) and I’ll be glad to talk over your options w/you…I’ll even meet up w/you and shop w/you if you’d like…(I shop for fun and my S won’t voluntarily set foot in any store except an electronics store–you can be my “stand-in” kid for college dorm room shopping if you’d like!)

we got the XL sheet set at Target for $20 - all cotton and high tread count. We got the fiberbed at BBB for 39.99 and a mattress pad to go over it (9.99). The sales clerk said she sleeps on those in her dorm and they work great. we shall see…

Sears online and Target with choices D likes. S was simple, blue or grey, good we’re done.

we ordered stuff at BB & B
had them send it to the college but not till move in day
worked great and much nicer sheets than the ones in the school flyer

Buy the stuff separately. Unless you are spending top dollar, the bed in the bag things have very stiff sheets. Plus…in college do you really want or need pillow shams and dust ruffles…I think not. The regular twin jersey knit cotton sheets are great. They stretch and fit smoothly over an egg crate AND mattress pad on an XL (and extra thin and narrow) mattress. When DS went to college, the first place we went shopping was our linen closet where we had sheets and towels. He took one of the comforters off of his bed. After all…he wasn’t going to be using them at home! He also took a pillow from home. Save yourself some money…everything you need doesn’t have to be brand new. My opinion is that older washed sheets are more comfy anyway…ditto towels.

overanxious - I was just thinking that what Andrew needs is a Personal Shopper, but couldn’t figure out how to accomplish it. Hope he takes you up on your offer. My S, who like yours will only set foot in an electronics or drum shop, has me as his Personal Shopper. Involves also being the Queen of Returns, but, hey, I’m into accumulating high-falutin’ titles ;).

As an aside, we’ve done well with the jersey stretch sheets. However, I am not sure they really get used all that much, as I think my s. tended to fall asleep on top of his blanket a lot of the time. We bought a really soft chenille blanket/comforter thing from a website last year (sorry, can’t recall the name, but it was a great deal) and he’s really found it very comfy!

I just lost half of my previous post, so I’ll resend it. In today’s (July 29) paper, there is an ad for a bed-in-a-bag deal (XL sheet set, comforter, pillow sham) from Kohl’s for $45. If you order on line, S&H is free. If you spend an extra 5 bucks (ie $50 or more) you’ll get a $10 cash coupon back from Kohl’s. Not a bad deal.

I have only one word - Frette.

Never seen one myself. ;)

Mini:

If a student wanted to buy Frette bedsheets (and not just one set, of course), then s/he would need to invest in laundry service. Thanks to the flyer sent to me, I know now that my laundry services (washing, drying, folding) would set my S back anywhere between $400 to $1000 per year. We have not, of course, discussed DormAid, which might be necessary, considering that S leaves even washed, dried, folded laundry on the floor rather than putting it away in drawers or closet.
So, no Frette or Pratesi sheets, and we won’t need to take another mortgage on the house.
S will be using his brother’s XL bedsheets and do his own laundry, and, with luck, occasionally clean and tidy his room.:)

Oh, I forgot about Parchesi! What can I say - no class! :o

Marite-
Thank you for clarifying Mini’s post. My head was elsewhere and I had no idea what “Frette” was, other than what I was doing, in the middle of paying both sons’ school tuitions! Also, I am awaiting the arrival of the washing machine repair guy, and tomorrow both boys return home from their summer activities- the older one with 6 of his friends from around the world who will be staying with us for a few days. They’ve been working as camp counselors and will have 9 weeks of smelly, mildew-y clothes. Oh washer repair guy, where art thou?? Talk about FRET!!

Wow, Frette and Parchesi again!!

(It’s that time of year. ;))

The big decision is the 700-count linen vs. the cotton jacquard.

Opinions? (Growing up, I only knew about Fred and Ethel.)

Andrew - another Mamma here who wants to be a personal shopper. I love bargains, but there are a few things that I like to go for quality on, and bed linens are one. Most people find all cotton sheets, and high thread count sheets, to be more comfortable (albeit wrinkly) than percale or blend sheets - I would suggest 300 thread count at least, and either get regular twin that will fit at least 14 inch deep mattress, or extra long twin. Buy one set to bring with you, and then follow Overanxiousmom’s advice for the other linens. When you are sheet shopping, check out the jersey sheets - some people like them, some don’t, they don’t usually come in differing thread counts, and may not be all cotton. Other bed linens you could buy when you get there - I know you have a long way to fly and other things to consider rather than shipping comforters, just the sheets will do for a couple of days until you get to the store. I don’t doubt your roommate’s mother might have suggestions, too. Look at the Mama dressed beds - you want some things to make the bed softer, and cleaner, and some way to vary the weight of your covers - remember the dorm may actually be hot in the winter, and layering bed covers might be more comfortable than a winter weight comforter.
