I flew transatlantic this week and noticed that most people reclined, however only a few inches. That may have been as far as the seats were capable of reclining. There was one angry outburst by a man accross the aisle from me. He was obese, but to make matters worse, he had a laptop AND a big salad on his lap. When the person in from of him reclined (suddenly, I might add), he yelled, “Hey! Hey! What are you doing?” She immediately put her seat back upright and never reclined again. In all fairness, she had no idea what she was “backing into”. But on the other hand, the guy should have realized he was taking up a lot of space.

I just witnessed one of the nicest acts anyone could do on a plane. I was on my way back from London, 8 hrs flight. Two young women came on the plane and couldn’t find a place to put their carry ons. One guy tried to rearrange various bins, but couldn’t fit their cary ons. This guy took his carry on down to put it under the seat and put the girls’ luggages up there. He sat there for 8 hours without able to stretch out his legs. The girls thanked him profusely, but I think those girls could have offered to put his bag under their seats because they were a lot shorter than him.

the seats in coach don’t recline all that far, IME.

On a flight a few days ago from Chicago to PDX the person in front of me suddenly reclined and my mini (had put in with the magazines for a few minutes) slammed into my knee. I am only 5’2.5 inches and have short legs to boot. It actually hurt. It was a weird experience as I have been reading here…

S, all 6’5’ of him, and solidly built, flew in last night. He said in San Diego they took a look at him, and moved him to an exit row, plus adjusted his return to include exit row seats. This was Delta, to give credit where due

He said reclining into his space is a moot point, as his knees are an effective seat blocker.

This discussion makes me fear for some upcoming long flights. I don’t know if I can endure a 12 hour flight sans recline. With recline, and a window seat, I am a happy, curled up camper.

Just sat in coach and the guy next to me had already flown a 12 hour flight into there from Europe. Seems like a bit of an exaggeration, because the winter winds aren’t here yet and it shouldn’t have been quite that long. Whatever.

I was feeling sorry for how tired and miserable he said he was, until he took off his shoes. His socks smelled like they hadn’t been washed in a long time. Just disgusting. To think, I was going to take mercy on him and give him my window seat. Ha!

Ewww… Bus, you should have snapped a photo for that Passengershaming site! :)

I sat next to a woman having bad breath before. It was terrible.

Is it OK for people to blow their nose when you are eating your meal? You saw that very often.

On my way to the Chicago last week (leaving from my beloved but no less New Age Hippie Land) on Southwest (we had paid the extra $14 each for our line up for the seat deal) a young man and his wife, boarding late, approached me and he asked said, “My wife is pregnate, we would like to sit together”. I replied, “I am not giving up my ailse seat, sorry”.

She took the middle seat behind us and he sat next to me. He ended up being very nice and realized I was cold and asked me if I wanted the vent off and then later if I wanted it on/ (SW was having cooling/ heating issues and were very vocal and upfront about the problems).

I wanted to tell him that he might have stood a chance if he had asked further back in the plane as they would not have paid extra for their position in the line up. It was a 3 hour flight so not a huge deal.

“Is it OK for people to blow their nose when you are eating your meal?”

What does one have to do with the other? You aren’t dinner companions at a table.

I once had S1 as a lapbaby on my lap right after he polished off a jar of Gerbers blueberries & rice baby food. He had a good bit of the blue goo on his face.

When the pax sitting next to me turned in his seat, S1 wiped his blueberry face across the back of the pristine sleeve of the man’s nice white business shirt. The guy didn’t know anything happened, so I just sat there and didn’t say a word. :-"

If I have paid extra for a particular seat, I would not be willing to give it up just so a married couple could sit together.

“If I have paid extra for a particular seat, I would not be willing to give it up just so a married couple could sit together”

For me, it depends on how nicely they ask and where they are asking me to move to. I can’t think of any circumstance where I would ask another person to move to a center seat. In the Southwest situation, the couple could have paid extra to board early, or at least if they had checked in earlier they would have gotten further up in line. If it was important enough to them to ask someone else to move to a center seat, they should have done so. They also should have kept walking back to see if there was a place with two seats open, instead of stopping at the front and expecting someone would move because the wife is pregnant. I have more sympathy for people on other carriers, because sometimes you have no choice where your seat is, and your family could be spread all over the airplane, even if you have status or paid extra. If the seats aren’t available, there’s nothing they can do.

Groan. My int’l flight has economy class seat configuration that is 2-5-2. Three adjacent middle seat passengers (I’m one of the unfortunates) fighting over armrests. This is gonna be a loooong flight…
