Seattle advice please - suburban feel apartments commutable to SLU

His temp place is across the street from his office. His permanent place (which will be available at the end of the month) is by Seattle Center. @kiddie - he went to Mod Pizza already! And I’m already planning to go to the Chihuly museum next time I’m in town.

My daughter lived in Seattle for 6 months and her temporary housing was a block from the Seattle Center. She visited the Chihuly enough times (probably over a dozen) that it paid for the membership even with her only being in town for 6 months. There is a fabulous supermarket (open 24 hours) just north of Seattle Center - Metropolitan Market. They sell wonderful prepared foods, great gelato, and very good bread. My daughter lived alone in a small studio with no oven (only a microwave and stovetop) so it was perfect to get food.

That Metro Market is great… But the prices there beat the Whole Paycheck’s prices. For staples, there are a Safeway and a QFC within walking distance of that MM. For pizza, try Pagliacci, and Racha Thai restaurant across the street from that MM is yum.

My kid decided that paying $1500 for a studio or a crappy 1 bed without parking was a deal breaker. So she is paying $1000 for a room in a townhome (it covers garage parking and utilities). It is further away from her work, but within a short distance of a major “epicenter.”

Next month is known as ‘Junuary’—cold and rainy is the norm. We might luck out, surely we deserve a break from rain and cold, but more than likely it’ll be awful. But right about July 4th, the skies will clear and it’ll be heaven for 3 months. At least that’s how it normally is. Then come October we’ll batten down for 9 months of snotty weather. So if you come back out to visit, come out July-Sept.

Ooh - I just figured out if we want to visit in the fall, we can fly up and visit, then take the ferry to Vancouver, and then take a repositioning cruise back down to San Diego. Some of them stop in Victoria, San Fransisco, and/or Catalina Island. Then the opposite in the spring. This is starting to look very promising. B-)

The ferry goes to Victoria (Victoria Clipper), @Marilyn then you can take another to Vancouver. Good for your son for branching out of his comfort zone, and good decision on the area. He will also be walking distance to the Seattle Rep Theater and the EMP (plus kids stuff, plus ballet and opera that I never go to). Folklife Festival is always over Memorial Day weekend, free but donations appreciated.

Cafe Appassionato is right there. People will drive miles for their coffee. The two restaurants I frequent in the area are Mashawi (Lebanese) and Crow (NW fusion). Growing up in NY state I have issues with Seattle pizza, but will go to Serious Pie.

We like our snotty weather and our Gore-Tex - there is still a ton of snow in the Cascades.

Congrats to your son. From what I hear from mine he’ll like the food trucks for lunch. Walking to work is good exercise. Son told us about the museum at the south end of Lake Union- we went without him and we need to get him there. It was fun seeing the '70’s sign stating would the last person to leave Seattle please turn out the lights- booms and busts…

Enough to do in Seattle and environs to make yearly summer trips worthwhile. Kid visits us in Florida during those dark wet months… Curious to see what my son chooses when his lease runs out this summer. He walks not only to work but downtown and other places along the waterfront.

btw- your son does not need a fancy wardrobe at all.

This winter was extremely wet in Seattle- even a native was tired of it- 50% more rain than usual the past 6 months, record setting over 46" before the end of April. Funny how we had virtually no rain in Florida in the same time period- a severe drought here after a very wet year before.
