Seattle ideas?

UW has relatively few OOS students and the vast majority are from the Seattle area. Most weekend social life seems to be centered on Frat row where there have been numerous problems over the years. Campus is very empty on weekends. The main campus drag (The Ave) has become a hangout for street kids and can be dangerous at night. Not particularly inviting during the day either. Many kids seem to have migrated over to the U Village shopping center which is clean and safe.
The school has great resources but may not have made the leap to emphasizing ug to the extent that some other similar schools have. They got a nice bump in state $$$ this session and should improve in UG education.

sunsea- That’s so great that your daughter found “her place”. It sounds like you got a great tour ( 6 dorms! ) and were able to get a good read on the school. I am glad everything worked out for her - Good luck to her as a Viking!

I think it is actually much more appealing than it used to be a few years ago- my 16 year old and her friends take the bus from Wallingford(from school) down 45th about once a week to shop and eat.

U village does have both college and high school kids, but it is fairly high end, it has a QFC and a liquor store, which attracts lots of university students, and a Barnes and noble and open courtyard where some study, but the shops are like * Coach* & the really high end denim stores-Anthropologie, Lucky, Jcrew, not to mention the shops that cater to the Laurelhurst moms.
( got to mention Lucky jeans- the music is Deep Purple and Janis Joplin-, mexican wedding shirts and tie dyes I feel like I am 14!-* not that I ever wanted to be 14 again* the staff are also often college students and talkative)

I like U village because it is open air- not technically a “mall”, and because it reminds me of when I would walk around when my youngest was a baby, while we waited for her sister to get down with her art class nearby.
( but they don’t even have a theatre- although there are several toward Wallingford- however, you can hang out in the Apple store and take a free workshop while you use their wireless)

there is a lot going on in Seattle though and they don’t have to stay around the UW on weekends

I don’t know the % of out of state undergrads, but a low % wouldn’t make it much different from Cal or UCSC.

I like the encouragement re WWU, I hope we can find time to visit during teh school year.
congratulations :)

I was thinking more of Seattle’s busiest Starbucks.

Starbucks?

[Who goes to Starbucks?](http://seattle.wifimug.org/)

I admit that if in a town with few if any coffee shops, I have gone to Starbucks- but in Seattle you don’t have to.

Thanks everyone, we’ll be biting OOS tuition bullet, so our child better get used to the weather there! We are so spoiled here in CA.

yow

hey sunnsea
If you are from CA- can you adopt my daughter?
She wants to go to Santa Cruz
but seriously

Great idea EK!

Well, lots of people at U Village–enough that there are now three Starbucks in the project. No independents.

I agree that Uvillage is packed- and few independent stores at all- even MudBay is one of several local stores-.

But [Zoka is only 1/2 a block away](Zoka - Relaxation of the ■■■■■■■, — LiveJournal)

sunnsea, the weather can often be nicer in Bellingham :)

Hey Emerald,
Thanks for the link, we’ll sure send it in. D is not going to be on the priority list due to her grades and scores, but she’s a pretty good writer. It would be great if she got this scholarship.
Re: UC Santa Cruz, it’s very very liberal campus and a busy drug scene. Make sure it is what your d is looking for before paying $$ OOS. The had less applications this year than a year before so it’s easier to get in.
Thanks everyone again for support. this site is great and I just found it last month.

Who goes to Starbucks? Well, enough people that the money we made on Starbucks stock (bought in '95) paid for two years of private college tuition.

Thank you, latte drinkers everywhere.

good for you dmd

I * realize* that many people go to Starbucks- enough that I doubt if I have enough fingers and toes to count the locations just in Seattle proper- and making sure you are in the * right* Starbucks for your college alumni interview has been bumped up from #7 to # 5.

I just like going to places that have a more local feel- like Red Mill instead of McDonalds and Zoka instead of Starbucks.
