Nrds, it would be very entertaining reading if not for the fact that these people live among us!

People do love the drama! I got reamed on FB by a relative for not being sufficiently scared of ebola. Because, she “has a child she cares about, even if the rest of us don’t.” It just got wackier and wackier. This was right in her Borderline Personality wheelhouse. :/

^^I was unfriended on FB today by an ostensibly science-friendly and aware person because I said that the nurse in Newark deserved better than what she was experiencing. Apparently the nurse is a whiner.

My relative defriends me regularly. But because family, I keep accepting her back again. I just accept it as a regular thing. Like tides. or seasons.

“One person speculated that HCW exposed to Ebola could be kidnapped by terrorists and used to infect all of us if not quarantined.”

There was a similar story line on The Black List recently. Where volunteers infected themselves with some virus and then went on airplanes…Maybe that’s where they got that idea from.

The people to blame for the panic is the media. If they weren’t covering this 24/7 we wouldn’t be where we are now. The media in general is only after ratings and has caused more harm than good recently.

Carting someone around to puke on people at the mall doesn’t seem like the most efficient vector to bring down the nation if you were a terrorist. Heaven help the person who pukes at the finish line of the New York City Marathon next week.

One of the news articles mentioned that she is a CDC employee - is this accurate?

There are nutcases out there saying all the hospitals have been “ordered” not to say they have cases of Ebola, but to call it something else (malaria or some such). Spreading this type of thing is dangerous, IMHO, and these nutcases should be quarantined some place quiet themselves.

This situation has revealed what a culture of fear and paranoia we are living in. People with NO medical knowledge convincing themselves that they know better.

yes. it is frightening.

My daughter showed me the most bizarre article. It started off talking about ebola then I got really confused when it veered off into talking about how the US kills hundreds of thousands a year by banning deet because they care more about birds than children. They seemed to be under the impression mosquitos spread ebola. It was so crazy, I thought I was reading the onion. And the comments there were all in agreement. There are some really daft people out there.

FYI 60 minutes is just starting with an interview with some of Mr. Duncan’s nurses.

How can they justify quarantining this one nurse but not the health care workers taking care of the active cases here in the US? Or are they being quarantined too?

I think it’s DDT that they’re whining about, swimcatsmom. DDT does kill mosquitoes, which carry malaria (but not Ebola, as far as anyone knows). And right now DDT is being used in large amounts in Africa and Asia to kill mosquitoes. So this whining about DDT being banned is, as usual, uninformed hooey from the ignorant.

I think you’re probably right Cardinal Fang.

This.
Just what I said to H after watching the 60 Minutes piece.

Nah, they are just average Americans of average intelligence who have easily deduced that if the HCW with the most knowledge of the disease cannot protect themselves from getting it, then why should they be trusted to know how it is transmitted? It is pretty simple, really.

LOL. Why?

It’s frightening because people are being harmed by this ignorance. They have kidnapped this innocent, non-contagious nurse and are jailing her in a TENT, with none of her own clothing, none of her own food, none of her own computers or books or anything, and no indoor plumbing.

I wouldn’t want to be living in a tent in NJ right now. It’s cold!

“Nah, they are just average Americans of average intelligence who have easily deduced that if the HCW with the most knowledge of the disease cannot protect themselves from getting it, then why should they be trusted to know how it is transmitted? It is pretty simple, really.”

That makes no logical sense. Doesn’t speak highly of the average American.

“There are nutcases out there saying all the hospitals have been “ordered” not to say they have cases of Ebola, but to call it something else (malaria or some such). Spreading this type of thing is dangerous, IMHO, and these nutcases should be quarantined some place quiet themselves.”

Everything is a conspiracy in BubbleWorld.
