Second Ebola patient

Temporal (?) thermometers are quite prone to give inaccurate readings. She told them to use an oral thermometer. When they did, she had a normal temp. They acknowledged that the other readings were inaccurate.

My younger daughter always looked feverish after hard days of playing in child care. I cannot tell you how many times I got a phone call/had to pick her up because one of those lousy thermometers gave an inaccurate reading. She was flushed from excitement and activity, not sick. After #2D calmed down and cooled off, her temp was always normal.

I am not doing research on them. They are common reagents that are used in the lab. It is just that people should take extra care when handling them. These recommendations exist even though no one has evidence of it causing cancer. They are suspected carcinogens based on their chemical properties.

Did they have an oral thermometer at the airport?

Off to play bridge with my CDC friend. Will listen for updates. No disease risk. CNN is reporting on the problems with the thermometers used to read the returning passengers. They are also saying she should have been quarantined for maybe 24 hrs and then, with no fever or symptoms, released.

If anyone gets an alert about the little boy, please post. This must be hard on him.

I have no idea. I do remember when they were instituting temp taking at the airport, a question came up; What do you do if someone arrives with a fever? That CDC would take it over was the answer I remember. It is not a small matter since that’s i that needed to be dotted. The problem so far has been there were too many loose ends.

No news yet on the little boy, but CNN said they are “tracking his and his family’s movements”. I assume that means from when he got home til when he was hospitalized?

If i may repeat, how long was the nurse in the tent? Did she go back to the tent after going to the hospital? Or was it until she was transported to the hospital?

CDC press conference led by Dr. Frieden to discuss returning healthcare workers is scheduled for “any minute”. AM heading out so will miss it.

This says she was in the tent for 3 days <a href=“Unapologetic, Christie Frees Nurse From Ebola Quarantine - The New York Times”>http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/28/nyregion/nurse-in-newark-to-be-allowed-to-finish-ebola-quarantine-at-home-christie-says.html</a></p>

Why are you so interested in how long her detention was? The length of unlawful detention can matter, but it is not a deciding factor.

Do you mean they took her to the hospital to take her temp and brought her back to the tent and took her again to the hospital to take the temp 2nd time?

The tent was at the hospital .

From what I understand, the tent is set up WITHIN one of the hospital buildings.

I imagine there were issues with transporting Ms. Hickox back to Maine. I read it was by private car, but I don’t know who was driving. The quarantine would not have allowed her to sit in a public airport, train or bus station. I’m guessing a family member had to come down with their car to pick her up. How long does it take to drive to NJ from Maine (I’m a CA’n)?

You may not agree with the detention, but the detention wasn’t unlawful. There was a procedure etablished in preparation of bio terror attacks. The state had the power to detain/quarantine to contain the spread.

Igloo - are you a lawyer?

We don’t know yet whether it was lawful or unlawful.

Exactly. We don’t. The legal eagles I chatted with say that they would not give the NJ govt. a free pass here under that quarantine order. Eventually, this will be sorted out in due time if she decides to proceed with a civil action.

I must have missed the part about Ms. Hickox being a suspected terrorist.
