selectivity

kklicker, I’m a faculty member at a large state school, and somewhat familiar with UF (actually had a job offer there once, and dug into the place fairly deeply).

My immediate reaction is that the general quality of instruction and students at Tulane is superior to that of UF. BUT (large but), the choice may well come down to what your son wants to study. Every school has their strengths and weaknesses.

FWIW:
I spoke with the Housing Director a couple of weeks ago as I was very concerned about housing on campus for a rising sophomore. While he didn’t “guarantee” housing on campus, he certainly implied that they feel pretty confident they’ll have enough on campus for all students who really want it. He went on to explain that the slightly lower student body (to his knowledge to be about 300 smaller than last year’s entering freshman class), coupled with some newer housing not previously available (some of this includes the modulars added after Katrina) is what makes this possible.

I felt much better after speaking with him and am very optimistic that all will work out. He is a really personable guy, by the way.

Hope that helps.
