Self Sell/Direct Sell Products/Parties - Which Did You Fall Victim To Most?

I think the only MLM thing I bought was some Mary Kay makeup back in the early nineties. I never wore it because I don’t wear makeup often.

I love Pampered Chef and I even hosted a party once. My friend likes it so much that when she bought a second home, she bought duplicates of everything she used in her main home.

I sometimes find Pampered Chef stuff at the thrift store. Pretty exciting to get a $39 Apple Peeler for $4. The stuff is often in the original box, so someone bought it to make a friend happy and I get the benefit.

Ditto Longaberger baskets, Pampered Chef, Discovery toys.

Usborne books, anyone?

Ten or fifteen years ago, Southern Living parties were all the rage in my neighborhood. I went to several and ended up with a couple of decorative platters, an iron wine rack and a couple of other serving pieces that I still use. Those were all okay and the socializing was fun. I always avoided the jewelry parties since I don’t wear much. Thankfully, the number of those types of invitations really decreased as the kids moved through and out of the school system.

Partylite- now that’s a blast from the past! Oh the agony of those parties- I always ended up with a headache!

^Oh, you’re right - definitely forgot about Partylite. I think I still have a few things stuck away in a cabinet. Might be time to Marie Kondo those!

I went to a few fun Tupperware parties and bought a few items. I refused multiple invitations to Amway events, makeup (never wear any and have lots of allergies).

Saw three identical Cutco demos one summer. They said they needed to practice on us so I said fine but I wasn’t buying. I think they hoped we’d change our mind. One was my nephew’s then GF, so everyone felt obligated to buy something, so we bought a heavy duty stainless steel turner/spatula that we really get a lot of use out of but it was like $50!

A guy on the street begged to be allowed to demo some vacuum cleaner so we felt sorry for him and warned him we weren’t buying as we were happy with our two robotic vacuums. He was sad and surprised we didn’t change our minds and buy his $$$$ product!

My friend has given me two longaberger baskets. One I regifted with a gift and the other is a small casarole dish I use a lot. I didn’t buy them though, so I guess those don’t count.

Bought a pricey pair of Cabi ponte slacks and cotton sweater/wrap at a “party.” I like them but they were much more than I had intended to spend and aren’t the quality I expected.

No one has mentioned Norwex, it’s cleaning cloths. Their stuff is great. I have a window cleaning cloth that’s 10 years old and I use it everyday. There are other microfiber cleaning cloths but the Norwex one is better. Only went to one party but I will occasionally buy off of eBay.

I have some Pampered Chef items, I have a pizza stone that I use all the time.

My aunt’s SIL was big in the Longenburger organization, she was one of the very first to get in. But I have 2 baskets I think, I was never that into them. I think the 2 I have my mom bought me since she had to buy something.

I think I must be a horrible friend because I only buy what I want. I went to a jewelry party once and bought a sterling silver ring that was well made, had a pretty stone, was reasonably priced, and was something I knew my daughter would love. I attended the Tupperware party of a work colleague and got a set of measuring cups and spoons for my daughter’s Christmas stocking. They’re good quality, didn’t cost a lot, and were on my list anyway.

When the children were younger one of the other mom’s hosted Creative Memories photo parties. Those were fun because we actually worked on photo albums undisturbed by spouses and children. I bought a couple of tools I really liked (a square hole punch and some cutting tools), but I bought my books from the local craft store. I used the tools for many years. Eventually I started making photo albums online, but I used the tools for school and scout projects, so I got my money’s worth. But, no matter how many times I was asked, my home was never, ever available for demos or parties.

I have gone to events where friends host sample sales of Lilla P. and sales of homemade jewelry (some is very nice but $$$). I have a few pampered chef items, but TBH the chopper, which I loved, cracked (the outside piece) and the apple peeler didn’t work well. I really dislike attending. jewelry parties and usually decline. I dont like feeling pressured to buy or guilty if I don’t.

I did buy tupperware when in grad school, and read that some of the retro pieces are valuable now!

EVERY single one of these parties (except lila P right above) I’ve been to. It was all the rage as a stay home mom to sell things on the side. (ok here’s one not mentioned yet that i liked: Usborne books)

I hated going after awhile. I even wrote to Ann Landers once asking if it was OK to not RSVP to these parties as they are commercial, money-making events and not really celebration parties! Probably have been to or invited to 100s.

But, the one that sucked me in was : Stamping parties back in the early 2000s. It was so much fun. I have 1000s of pieces still; and once i got the craving I didn’t buy from just distributors, but from all over. Styles have changed; my products aren’t worth anything, but i did enjoy that period of stamping. My speciality: i would make homemade thanks cards for breast cancer patients to give.

This is a great IMO podcast about MLM’s (direct sales/home parties). If you’re looking for a new podcast or want to know more, it’s a series worth a listen. https://www.thedream.fm

Years ago when many of my friends and I were SAHMs someone was always hosting a party to sell products. I tended to buy the minimum.
Best purchase I ever made was from Usborne books. I bought a big book on world geography for S . He loved that book and learned so much from it. It was so well loved the cover fell off. In hindsight I would have bought it with “ library binding”.

Usborne is still around pretty strong. I have partnered with them at work a couple of times for fundraisers for programming.

My SIL who I adore seems to go through a new “fav” of these direct sell products every couple years. Lot of cleaning products ones. @deb922 I should give you my Norwex cleaning cloths - I don’t use them and don’t appreciate them! I actually hate the way microfiber feels - she gave me a whole set of stuff - this one for this purpose, that one for that purpose - just hand me a rag and I’m happy!!!

I still have and use a few of my Longaberger baskets - my decorating tastes have changed and I don’t want such a strong vibe of baskets all over the house.

I managed to avoid most of these, unless food was involved. Then I’d buy something small.

I loved Discovery Toys but I don’t remember parties. I think someone must have just shown us catalogues to choose from. I went to a couple Tupperware, one Pampered Chef, and some other decorating stuff brand, really ugly stuff. I think I actually bought nothing at that one.

Oh, and there was this woman’s sex products one…a bunch of middle class, ordinarily on the staid side women watching demonstrations of … well, you get the picture.

Neglected to mention- I did buy a longenecker basket though TBH I don’t like or use it, from a former friend. I felt pressured to buy it, and am not really sure where it even is. Also still have several bottles of Avon Skin So soft. Any takers??

I’d forgotten about Discovery Toys too. Only went to one event, but they were great toys. I have some Tupperware that has lasted 25 years. I never liked the sales model though. We do own some Usborne books, I have no recollection of where they came from. My kids loved them.

I can’t remember the specifics but a friend’s son called and asked to come by–never said he was selling Cutco. He was a nice kid, so I bought two knives. My sense was that Cutfco trained the kids not to say they were selling something–I could be wrong. I did like the knives.

My nephew’s wife sells LuLaRoe and she bombarded me with emails, Facebook videos, etc. This was a woman I never met–she’s my nephew’s second wife and they got married in Utah and haven’t visited family since then. Anyway I bought a pair of leggings (which I figured I could always use)–big mistake. Leggings were really poor quality.

I guess I am an outlier in that I enjoyed the jewelry parties. Back in the day Silpada made some nice stuff I thought and then Stella & Dot was big. I don’t have a lot of confidence in my fashion style so I liked having trusted friends tell me what would work with my clothes etc.

I did enjoy some of the Pampered Chef items. I really dislike the idea of these parties though. Making money off your friends is something I could not do - I never hosted a party, it just made me too uncomfortable to consider.
