@oldfort, I have to chime in about the scam. This happened to a friend who was selling furniture on Craigslist year ago. She was naive enough to give the guy her address so he could mail her a check and then send movers to pick up the items. Days later, she received a check for $5000 which was ten times the price. He emailed saying he made a mistake and could she just cash the check and then write him a check for the difference? When she told me this, I couldn’t believe the scammer got this far. She called the police who, of course, said there was nothing they could do. So interesting that this is still going on.
Agree it is dangerous to let folks into your property. My relative allowed the sports team to have a joint tag sale for raising money to go on a trip for baseball. Someone stole his brand new pressure washer (which wasn’t part of the items for sale). He declined to have any other sales at his home.
Unfortunately it is illegal to leave anything on the curb side except on few designated dates. I have someone coming by tonight to give an estimate. I just sold a piece over the phone.
I recently bought a small table on Facebook Marketplace. It was the first time I had done this. Since I would be going to a stranger’s home, I was relieved when Facebook showed that we shared two common “Facebook friends”. Seemed safer that way.
I agree with not letting anyone in your home. When I’ve sold items on Facebook and Craigslist there were either on my deck or I moved them to my garage. Never take a check, cash only.
Would any of your mom’s furniture or art be considered “designer” so it could sell on Real Real?
No. She has Henredon furniture, and some beautiful Chinese vases, but I wouldn’t know the value. I have an appraiser coming tonight. If she could do the whole thing without a lot of hassle then I am going to go with her. Don’t really care about getting the most money, the point is to just move stuff out before she moves.
@oldfort I have experience selling furnishings and household items on Craigslist. I’ve done it in a big way twice. When I downsized from a large home in VT to a city apartment four years ago, I sold a lot on FB. Very recently, I did this all again when I downsized from a two bedroom apartment to a one bedroom apartment in a different city. Also, one of my daughters has sold furnishings on Craigslist as recently as this month due to their impending move to their new home. I haven’t bought stuff on Craigslist but that D has gotten some amazing furnishing finds. I also sold D’s car for her on CL when she moved to England a few years back…was paid in cash.
Anyway, the advice in post #8 is exactly what I would have given you too. And yes, it is a scam when they won’t meet in person and say they will send movers and mail a check, etc. Only meet in person with who is buying it and only take cash. I haven’t run into any significant problems. Occasionally someone doesn’t show up, but overall, people seem to be honest and it has worked well. It can be time consuming if you have a lot of items to sell as I did. It was spread over many weeks and there are a lot of emails and appointments. As well, for every item I sold, I first researched the item’s sale price if new and also if used and figured out how to price it accordingly. Be aware that some wanted to haggle with the price. Also, if something didn’t sell fast, I would lower the price.
@oldfort Do you have the company ETBH in or near your city? Great way to downsize. They are basically an on-line auction house, but have followers all over the US, so if there are any collectable type pieces, they are likely to get a better price. I’m not sure of the split, but they do all the work for you including photos, posting, etc. As they’ve grown in popularity, so too has the quality of their merchandise. But that also means they are much more picky about which estates they will accept to make it worthwhile.
Look at donating it. Usually all you have to do is get it the driveway.
I am getting better response on FB market place. Someone wanted to prove her identity actually sent me their business card. She turned out to be a local judge. I emailed the .gov email and she responded.
There is ETBH near us. I will check them out. Thanks.
^^Nice!!! Good luck.
Henredon is quality furniture. I’m not surprised you are seeing some interest.
In addition to ebay for help in valuation, this website might be helpful if you have any similar pieces.

@doschicos - I will check it out. I will let you all know where I am getting the best response. At some point we all need to do this, may it be for our parents or when we want to down size.
Sold a houseful of designer furniture on Craigslist, everything “cash and carry, price not negotiable”. Don’t post anything as “free”, always charge at least $25 - $50. I priced stuff at 20% original list price for non-vintage stuff. Yes, buyers tend to have a story (often interesting), and sometimes arrive late or reschedule. I enjoyed the experience.
Most memorable: the dozen adults and little kids, arriving as extended family-friends to help check-out our piano. Stayed an hour, kids kept wandering off, one guy wanted to dismantle newish piano to inspect innards, various piano tunes played, and they finally handed-over cash and carried it out. Had another guy waiting on porch, hoping to snag this Costco upright piano.
Funniest: guy arrived, handed-over cash, and picked-up our full-size two-door refrigerator and hand-carried it to his pick-up truck. No dolly. No helper. Guy sturdy weight-lifter type, but I gasped.
