You can only borrow $5-7K/year (depending on the year) for college. Anything else your parents have to co-sign. Even if they are eligible to borrow more, learn from their example!! A “LOT” of debt for undergrad- especially when you are going into fields that famously does not pay particularly well at the beginning, and double especially when you have really good alternatives is a terrible plan.
Four years at Columbia (the university, not the city…) is estimated around $340,000. You think that your parents can pay ~$110,000 of that, and you are thinking to borrow the other $230,000*? If those last 2 numbers are even remotely close, then no: you can not afford Columbia.
I am sorry for the cold shower- but getting your head around what your realistic options are is really, really important. You have worked hard, achieved a lot, and people are used to you being a high flyer in your school, and dreaming big is entirely fair! Saying “I’m going to Columbia” is a legitimate thrill. But if that is not a realistic path, better to face it now, and lay out what your priorities are.
That starts with getting a serious number from your parents, as @chmcnm said, and then looking for schools that you can afford with that number. USoCarolina Honors college may be your best bet financially, though I get how unpalatable that might be at first: the local college, the one the person in the middle of your class is also going to, etc. But you could get a good degree, you would almost certainly be able to do some study away- possibly more than once (a DC semester + an overseas year, for example)- and most likely graduate without debt. Not as glamorous as “I’m off to FamousU!” but a better start to life than years of debt.
There are other good choices- and if you come back with a clearer budget, there are a lot of people here who can help identify them for you.
*15-20 years of $1100-1500 / month debt repayment. On a $50K starter salary in an average-tax location (20%) that could be a third to a half your take-home pay- before rent, food, transportation, or any other expenses.
