Sending food to our kids, need advise.

The OP was “born” yesterday… Just saying.

Legitimate food (aka groceries) delivery (not just treats) cos used by my kids: Amazon Fresh, Amazon Pantry, and Safeway.

It’s a clever idea. But seems like one of those that will have its arc and then interest will dwindle as reality intervenes. It yields so many questions- not just the reheating, but where this meal sits until the kid is ready to heat it. If the kid has enough refrig/freezer space, you can just take a few frozen casseroles in smaller portions when you do visit.

I am interested in this because it’s getting harder for my parents to get to the grocery store. We don’t have Amazon Fresh where we are. Any other services to check out?

Gouf, is there Safeway delivery in your parents’ area? My kid in Baltimore uses it. She is a grad student and cooks her own meals (gasp! ).

Also, I have heard about Peapod, but have no personal experience with it.

Peapod and many grocery stores deliver. If you’re within a radius delivery can be free. With Peapod someone able to use the computer can comparison shop or use sales.

If the parents can’t afford much of a meal plan, and the kids can’t cook in their dorms, then it seems to me that the parents should be saving the ship-the-food money to use as a deposit on an off-campus site where the kids can cook.

We opted for cafe credit plan for odd hour dining. But the kids use the cafe credits up before the week is over sometimes. Seems like some have used amazon. I will look into using their service maybe. Do they have a physical location?

Not bad idea if you have a vegan kid. You can meet the bus at OakBrook Mall and send items then. I never used this and just send gift cards. Gives her reason to come home.

I used a Safeway store delivery for my Mom a couple of weeks ago. The downside was a $15 delivery charge and then she felt obligated to tip the driver because he brought everything all the way in and put it in two different places. I think it’s free delivery if you spend over a certain amount.

Kid says Safeway has “free delivery” timeslots. I guess that way it encourages people living near a customer who already ordered to order their groceries delivered at the same time. Never felt the need to tip the driver!
