Senior Discounts

Those of you who often go into fitness facilities may look into a senior discount there.

The gym I work for offers our senior members around 50% off. $15/month for a single ($34 normal) or $25/month for a couple ($46 normal).

I’m sure other places offer it as well…

I also forgot-- check with your insurance. There is a program called “Silver Sneakers” that will pay for your membership to certain gyms. This means that you can get all the benefits of the simple membership without paying a dime!

Many colleges offer free tuition for alums. Also our local CC has free tuition if space is available. College courses could be another thread in itself.

I believe the U. of Kentucky offers free tuition to all seniors. You do not have to be an alum.

Have any of you ever gotten funny looks when you’ve asked for a senior discount? I have. I’ve had to produce my driver’s license on more than one occasion. I guess it’s a compliment that people don’t believe I’m 56.

However, it can sometimes be embarrassing to look younger than one’s age. Last week I took my 60 year old husband to his 1st physical therapy session post-surgery. He has silver hair and mine is still its natural golden brown (yeah, sure, lol). The therapist asked if I was his daughter!! I feel just awful for my husband when that happens. It’s not the 1st time.

Reminds me of when we were first married. H was teaching at a junior high school and I was still attending college. We had only one car at the time. I’d drop H off at his school in the mornings and pick him up in the afternoons. I’d usually arrive a few minutes before classes let out for the day at the junior high. H was the band director and the band room was in its own wing pretty far removed from the rest of the school. One chilly day I went inside the band hallway to wait for H. The school librarian came down the hall scowling and demanded to see my hall pass! She turned a lovely shade of red when I explained that I was the band director’s wife.

I always win the goodies at the amusement parks where the 20-somethings guess your age. And they always short me by about 5-7 years. They really should have an elder guessing young folks ages to turn the tables…

OK…I got the postcard in the mail Saturday. It’s called Shoppers 60. KOHLs senior discount day is Wednesdays. Anyone 60 or over gets a 15% discount on Wednesdays. Guess what day I’ll be going to Kohls from now on??

Some chain restaurants may have discounts that they don’t automatically offer to be polite. For instance we occasionally give in to laziness and get a KFC bucket. had done so several times before one server gave us the 10% discount. Now we ask for it.

Ihop has a fairly good discount for seniors.

I order off the 55+ menu at some restaurants - it is usually plenty of food anyway.
