Senior prank at my sons HS

The atrium CANNOT be accessed unless you scale a wall or walk through the school. These kids scaled the wall. Coolweather, our schools all have filters. You cannot use facebook, myspace, etc.

The kids that contacted the media have had their suspension lifted. Kids are still planning a sit-in protest at the school tomorrow. Son is not planning to particpate. As a sophomore I don’t think he cares that much and he is too aware of the impact it might have if he was suspended and couldn’t do a final. BTW, Finals start TUESDAY, so no impact for seniors except those that were members of the National Honor Society have been kicked out.

We’re having an interesting discussion about this in our house now with our HS son against the district and our daughter (a teacher) thinking that the administration did the right thing. It’s fun to just listen to them talk.

It’s not very hard to get around those filters.

I’m glad to hear that the students who sent opinion pieces to the media have had their suspensions lifted. If there are consequences for trespassing the property, I can see that (not sure i’d do the suspensions but perhaps some sort of consequence).

I was saying that the outdoor lunch area at our school is in such a way where the building surrounds it on all sides and so it is more like a little mini courtyard and there is nothing to scale to get to it, other than through a building.

The article indicates that the police were called. Another stupid action by the school administration, in my opinion.

That’s what I’m saying Suzie - The building surrounds it on all sides. Cafeteria on one side, gym on another, classroom on a third and main building on the fourth. They took ladders and walked onto the roof and then jumped ten feet to the ground inside.

hops_scout - Actually it is not easy to get around the filters unless you are very tech savvy. We have similar ones at our library and you can’t get in without staff unlocking them. I’ve tried to get to my fb on my iphone at the school and could not do it.

I think the phrase, “police were called” is just a technicality. The officer quoted in the paper is the local police officer assigned to the school as the School Resource officer. We’re a small town and the police office is about half a mile from the school in the township building. It sounds to me like he would not have done anything except that the school asked him to.

Then your filters are a lot better than the ones my high school has/had. If a student here wanted on FB, myspace, etc they just had to do a quick google search and they were in.

OK… how 'bout a parent prank??

There are several couples that we’ve gotten to be good friends with over the years because our kids were all in show choir together. The dads spent many weekends driving a school van, with a trailer hooked onto the back that carried all the costumes, band instruments, props, etc. This often involved leaving school on a Saturday morning anywhere between 2AM and 5AM and not returning until Sunday morning around the same time. Anyway, the dads would take turns driving the van/trailer, and I guess sometimes one dad would be looking for another dad because he needed the keys to the van. I guess one day, one of the dads stopped at Ace Hardware and had several keys to the van copied so each dad could have his own set. A couple of times when cleaning, I’ve noticed my husband still has his keys to the van, and I’ve said he should probably return them to the school. He joked that he wasn’t the only one who had keys, and rejected my suggestion.

So a couple of months ago, we had some of these parents over at our house one evening and we were reminiscing show choir days, early mornings, late nights, etc. and it occured to me to ask how many dads there still had a key to the school van. No less than five raised their hands. We all kind of laughed, then one of the moms suggested that we should pull a parent prank - go up to school in the middle of the night, and move the van somewhere, like on the middle of the football field, baseball field, or something like that. We all thought it was a great idea and would have loved to have been there when someone realized the school van wasn’t where it was supposed to be, then found it on an athletic field… but no one had the guts to do it. Who knows, they all still have keys, maybe they will someday.

kathie…wow, your school building is like ours then, and I misunderstood when you said they climbed a wall. Wow, that was ambitious that they climbed onto the roof to go across to where the courtyard atrium is! I gotta hand it to them! Kinda funny in a way. Also pretty harmless but on the other hand, I suppose a school would have to worry about if anyone got hurt and all that stuff.
