Senior Willing to Answer Questions

Ryan-- just giving you a heads up that I’ll be IMing you later about a question on classes :-)

feel free :)

Ryan, i am getting a laptop from university computers when i come to BU in september . do you suggest buying a printer too? or is the $50 printing quota that BU gives to students enough to meet printing needs for this semester?

thanks

Some schools actually give you an additional quota (for instance, I have a quota for use in SMG and a quota for use at general university computers).

I got by my freshman year using my roommate’s laptop and my print quota, though you’ll might want a printer for convenience (late-night paper writing).

i dont know if ENG gives an additional quota, but is the printing office at 111 cummington street open 24 hrs? if not, do you know their hours by any chance? coz if i am writing a paper at 11 pm, i wont be able to print it the same day. might be a problem.

I’m told the lab on Cummington Street is open 24/7 (except holidays), but I never use that one–I used to always use the one in Warren, which closes at 1 am during the week I believe.

Ryan, do you recommend renting out the microfridge from BU? or is buying 2 seperate fridges (i am in a double) all right? how much will i need to use a microwave there, coz if i need one, i’ll have to get the microfridge.
also, could you tell me how many electrical outlets there are in a room at warren towers, or generally?

I’ve always rented out a microfridge and split the cost with my roommate…you could buy one if you wanted to (I think buying two would be a waste), I just never bothered to look into it. I do use my microwave once-in-awhile…I would go ahead and rent it for the first year and see whether or not you think you should just buy your own for the next year.

If I remember correctly, three per person…there’s a small outlet aboveyour dresser drawer (for a lamp or your razer), there’s one at your desk, and I think there may be another one behind your bed, but I’m not completely sure.

have a question about econimics at BU. Econ is in CAS, right? well, can I have a double major in econ and something in School of Management? also, if applying as undecided, they told me at BU that I can take classes in all the colleges, while I decide what major I want to be. however, if I decide to major in marketing and econ, would I have to transfer to the school of management after my sophmore year?
thanx.

Hello,

The first thing I want to mention is that there is only one major in SMG–Business Administration. If you want to double major, you’ll be getting a degree in Econ and a degree in Business Administartion (with a concentration in Marketing, if that’s what you choose). Essentially, everyone in SMG takes the same SMG courses (you’re required to take about 16 SMG courses and 16 CAS courses), except for your four SMG electives, which determine your SMG concentration (they have accounting, finance, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, law, marketing, operations and technology management and infromation systems).

Econ is in CAS. If you want to get a degree from both CAS and SMG, you have to apply to be in BUCOP your sophomore year, although you’ll want to start talking to advisors right away, as SMG can be a bit of a pain to schedule around at times. Do a search on the SMG website (management.bu.edu) for the Undergraduate Program Office’s number and ask for Norm Blanchard–he’ll be able to set you straight. When you’re accepted to BUCOP (it’s pretty easy, you just plan your schedule for the next four years and write a small essay), you’re a full-fledged member of both schools, so you don’t have to actually transfer.

I don’t know about being able to take any class you want if you’re undecided…CAS courses, yes, but probably not the case for SMG, SHA, COM and SAR, which have a lot of classes for majors only.

Hope that helped. Let me know if you have any other questions.

thanx ryanbis. your explanation helped a lot!

Is it still ok if i send in my payment on the deadline day (AUg 18). I mean, I’m going to BU and hand in my payment. And usually wat is the payment late fee?

Go to www.bu.edu

Click on Administration, look for a link to Student Accounting Services

The schedule of late fees is on there somewhere. Call them and ask them whether or not it’s ok. If you wait too long, they will withdraw you depending on how much you owe.

Is Boston (the city) the type of city where if you just start up a conversation with somebody you don’t know, they’ll think you odd?

People in Boston are great. I remember the first time we went there about 6 years ago for some re sox games, everyone on the T starting conversations wih us about where the best places to eat are and things to do around town. It was great. Plus during the school year everyone is a student lol.

What do I need to bring to my classes? Is it just my laptop and books? 'cuz I’ll be needing to buy a bag

I have some questions! First, I got most of my textbooks from the store shipped to my house, but they didnt send a chem lab manual, and I couldnt get the books for sociology because they STILL havent posted them yet! Ive emailed the manager and the store but have gotten no response. AHHH! Oh, and another thing, with the meal plan, does that count for the cute restaurants in GSU, like the sushi place, or is that only for residence dining halls? Oh, and are the elevators truly bad in Warren Shields Tower because they said so on the residence dorm thingy. AHHH I’m panicking! Oh, and on Tuesdays, I have sociology in the Kenmore Classroom Building on 565 Commonwealth from 9:30-11:00 and then the soc discussion from 11:00-12:00 on 96-100 Cummington. I don’t even know where Cummington is! And how do I get from one building to the other in 59 secs?! And that same day I go from 590-596 Commonwealth straight to 3 Cummington AGAIN IN 59 SECS! Please help me, I’m a mess. I won’t have my parents anymore. I’m gonna cry! I am so excited about going to BU but what if I screw up royally and can never get to my classes on time?! Final question: does anyone feel the same way that I do?

Classes let out 10 minutes early so you’ll have time to get from place to place. And Cummington Street is right behind Warren Towers. You can get your book situation figured out when you get to BU… its a lot easier to deal with stuff in person. MEALS can’t be used in the GSU but dining points and convenience points CAN be used. And yeah I’m getting a littler nervous too but I’m also really excited… I think thats normal lol. Good luck!

“Is Boston (the city) the type of city where if you just start up a conversation with somebody you don’t know, they’ll think you odd?”

It depends…at a Red Sox game, everyone’s very friendly…but, in general, remember that Boston is still a city and, while people are a lot more laid back than in Philly or New York, people would probably still look at you weird (especially since most of the people you’ll interact with aren’t actually from Boston). At least, I might look at your weird ;)

iceberq: It’ll depend on your class. You probably won’t need your laptop for class. Probably won’t need your text either. Find out on your first day.

AliAngel: You’ll get to your classes on time. Stop worrying. Have fun. Trust me, it’ll all work out.

Thanks for your help, Chrisso and Ryan. I’m a HUUUGE worrier. I’ll be panicking until I truly get settled in. I’ll get over it…hopefully lol.
