However, if the downwardly-mobile scions of high SES families graduated from college, wouldn’t it be unlikely that they would fall all the way to low SES (more likely falling to middle SES at the lowest), since they did graduate college and probably have some family safety net to keep them from falling too far if they graduated in an economic downturn? Unless, perhaps, they maintain spending habits that are higher than their income, such that they are always out of money with maxed-out debt.
