We rarely watched Sesame Street in our house. I don’t remember exactly why, though I did feel that we should limit screen time. I know my kids saw it at their babysitter’s house and I suspect I thought that was more than enough TV. I’ve seen enough of it to think Monsterpiece Theater is funny and to have a pretty good idea who all the characters are. My kids did not seem to find it particularly interesting. They never asked to watch it.
I learned a lot of Spanish from SS back in the day.

^^ probably my favorite SS video
I’ve been buying the Sesame Street postage stamps for work. They definitely make me smile and brighten my day!
We had “The Muppets Christmas Special” taped back in the day (VCR) and the boys would watch it all the time.
I’m watching the 50th anniversary show on PBS and I couldn’t be happier.
So great seeing all the old characters! Bob, Susan, Gordon, Maria, Luis - even Linda, who is deaf and always did sign language!
And characters like GUY SMILEY! Who could forget Guy!!?
That was one of my names for S2 because he was a very smiley baby.
Loved Guy Smiley. Didn’t he host “Squeal of Fortune”?
My kids loved Sesame Street and of course Elmo. Especially the older two when we didn’t have cable and there was very little programming for kids. (My oldest also loved Barney but that may be a less endearing memory).
60 Minutes had a segment last night on bringing Sesame Street to refugee kids in the middle east and North Africa. The MacArthur Foundation gave $100 million to Sesame Street and the International Rescue Committee to bring programming to young Syrian refugees. The website describes it:
The story focused on the number of children who are refugees and how little funding was available for children, especially young children, and how little was being done to address the trauma these kids are dealing with. Very inspiring story, although limited in scope at this point.
Here is the transcript.
