Who says China isn’t having issues? It’s said the air is so polluted in the cities that it’s equivalent to smoking a pack/day or more. I wouldn’t expect China to admit the scope of its problems.
I agree that particulate in the air can cause a whole host of problems, but then both deciduous & evergreen trees cause problems for some folks too.
So her dr has put her on a ketogenic diet, which I thought sounded alarming, but it’s apparently based on science which makes me feel better.

I’m not alarmed. This is the current science. Whether it’s right or wrong, it seems to be effective, so how can one argue? I hope it helps!
I think we have been tricked into the no fat no meat diet for so long, probably starts with the government and the dietary guideline.
I actually felt the movie still alice (and the book) were gross misrepresentations. Leaving her home all day alone - nope! Nothing over burners so she doesn’t set the house on fire - nope! And the movie made her so happy at the end. I think it’s devastating on a level the book and movie didn’t show.
Also, not being able to think of a word can happen to anyone. Misplacing keys can happen to anyone. Both of those were shown in the movie/book as early signs.
What I heard an expert in the field say, it isn’t that you can’t remember where your keys are; it’s rather, you don’t remember what keys are for.
Im extremely sorry for your friend, @emeraldkity4. That’s devastating news.
@lindyk8 I recently saw Still Alice, ( had not read the book) and agree with you about alzheimers depiction.
The Glen Campbell movie, did a much better job explaining and exploring the dementia journey.
Rethinking women’s risk of dementia, maybe not just living longer ?

Interesting the article mentioned the " brain is a little diabetic".
She has been on it for a while, to help another condition, but since the new diagnosis, is following it even more closely.
I had not been aware of it, which is why I was initially concerned. I really don’t know a lot about it, just that a diet without starch or carbohydrates, including many veggies and most fruits, seems kind of sad, especially as it is still in the research stage, not part of accepted protocol.
Oh good lord, you have to count the carbs in spices?
( while I sit eating cold pizza. Agog Primo.Breakfast of Champions)
There is no need to count carbs, if you eliminate gluten, you eliminate almost all carbs. Vegetables and fruits have carbs too.
Re: alzheimers research
Univ of San Diego is suing USC
Turns out USC hired lead Alzheimers research team away from UCSD
( $55 million dollar NIH grant money involved, and large clinical trial with 60 locations)
And, bickering about data access, because USC researchers changed the password blocking San Diego from data.
So much for their stated mission goal of " collaboration" in field of alzheimrs research.
Guess when so much money is involved, this is business as usual.
Makes me lose confidence when so many people are suffering, and the clock is ticking.

Post #10, there is also a University of San Diego. I think you meant UCSD is suing USC in your second line.
I think there is collaboration and there is stealing. Why did they put the information on Amazon if the work belongs to UCSD?
^ thanks for clarification about San Diego schools !
Yes, UCSD suing USC …
And the amazon account password issue is almost comical -
I have not read all of the posts, but I have read a number of there is one link to dementia that I have not seen mentioned: hearing loss. Theories are:
Hearing loss → difficulty following conversation → social isolation → dementia
Hearing loss → over-taxing the brain to make sense of conversation and speech → dementia
There is some very compelling work from Frank Lin, MD, PhD of Johns Hopkins University on this topic.

It’s not yet known if treatment with hearing aids staves off dementia. That is one of the topics Dr. Lin is currently studying.
I think hearing loss goes with one of my comment, anything above the head. Ear, eye, nose, and memory.
No, gluten is a protein, not a carbohydrate.
It’s the protein that makes wheat dough so springy and stretchy. It has nothing to do with carbohydrates except that it happens to be present in the grain that most westerners eat in most abundance.
You could eat a gluten-free diet that is nothing but carbohydrates if you wanted to.
Rice, corn, potatoes, sugars of all types - all gluten-free.
But wheat has gluten and is present in most bread and pasta, is it not? Yes all that stuff you wrote are high carbs too.
Yes. " All those things I wrote are high in carbs too". But NONE of them contain any gluten.
Gluten is the protein (not a carbohydrate ) in wheat, barley and a few other grains.
You need to read a bit more about basic nutrition.
I am not saying that most of us shouldn’t eat less white flour, white sugar processed crap. I am trying to eat a very un-processed diet and I know it’s hard.
I just get frustrated when people decide ‘gluten’ is somehow a poison.
Dragon mom, I must have wrote in a hurry, there is gluten in bread and pasta, so if you avoid both of these foods you tend to avoid most of the problem. How do you eat gluten the protein by itself? Tell me I would like to know.
I also avoid the high carb contents like potato, corn, rice and sugar too.
