You have to visit. Sewanee is unique, and definitely not for everyone. You need to experience it while classes are in session to understand it (unless you happen to be from Chattanooga, in which case you probably already know). This is not the kind of school to which you apply without having visited first. If you can’t visit, don’t apply.
My D24 fell in love with Sewanee during a visit over the summer. There were almost no students around (except for the admissions guides and students doing research), but the architecture and charm of the campus and little town shown through just fine.
We just returned from an Admitted Students Day, and it was even more impressive. They are generous with merit aid for highly qualified students.
It is like many LAC in its approach (no graduate students, except in theology and in creative writing (but then only in the summer). 98% live on campus all 4 years, and it is clearly very close knit.
Definitely worth a look - at least before accepting or rejecting an admission offer.
I am a big Sewanee supporter (and alum:). If you are looking for a traditional liberal arts experience you will find it there. I was a bit of an outsider in my day (northern liberal) but my biggest cultural shock was figuring out who Laura Ashley was (hello 1990 florals) and getting used to sweet tea. The academics were challenging and engaging, students friendly and open, and the mountain setting inspiring. It is a fit school, so definitely visit, but don’t be surprised if you come away impressed.
It flys under the radar for the general public, but consistently places students in great jobs or post grad programs. I know a lot of current students and am happy to answer any questions. The new Dean is also fantastic!
I’d also be surprised if you were full pay. They are very generous with merit (and need) aid.
Thank you very much for posting. We visited. My daughter loved it, and so did we. We are so glad we went because the environment is truly unique and special. She will definitely apply in the fall.
That’s great. I am glad it was a good visit. It’s such a special place. Best wishes!
