Just a suggestion - buy another one, have cars in both locations. Might be cheaper than to transport.

When we left New Orleans during Katrina the Best Western Hotel guide was a lifesaver. We took it from our hotel room. We didn’t have any road maps in the rental car and the maps in the Best Western guide helped us get to Houston through some roundabout routes which we would have never found without the guide.

Hello I see a lot of folks that need vehicles transported from west to east. I’m looking to get back to Virginia, from Las Vegas, I’ve made the trip many times over the last 9 years, longest was 3 days, Las Vegas to Norfolk, Virginia. I have a perfect driving record, for you to view, and a high security clearance from the fed. I looking to depart mid next week, 9/7 or 9/8…

twice I’ve used American Auto Transporters (www.shipcar.com), from LA to Boston and reverse. Because they are based near Boston, they were able to “store” son’s car for 6 weeks ($100 extra). Cost @ $1100- but son had trunk filled, which adds to cost. My friend has used them several times.

I just used Domestic Auto Transport to ship a car from SC to CA. It cost $1050 (after rebate). No problems at all although it took a little longer to find a driver than I’d expected (a couple of weeks).

Here’s the deal with these auto transport companies: they don’t have their own drivers. They just post the route and the amount they’re willing to pay to a centralized online board. The drivers, who are independent contractors, bid on the job. So you could get a really great driver or one who’s not so careful, regardless of the transport company’s reputation.

Shipped D’s car from Florida to California 2 weeks ago. Did not add extra insurance. We had to make sure that the car was totally empty, which was too bad as we thought to put a couple of suitcases in it. We also had to keep the gas tank next to empty. We paid $800 with Wheels on Wheels Carriers. Driving would have taken 36 hours and put 2600 miles on the car.

We’re still leaning toward driving & making a family trip of it. Am planning to have S upgrade to the furthest AAA tow package membership before we set out. His company reimburses for driving but NOT shipping. We’re looking forward to it & may stop & visit with friends along the route.

When we shipped from HI to San Diego, it was a closed container & the company was excellent. We bought it from a silent auction for $500–great deal!

In 2002, I bought a Lexus in Philadelphia on Ebay and have it shipped by a carrier to CA for about 800. They charge extra for door to door service, however, if it is depot to deport it is cheaper. I have it shipped to a depot about 30 minutes away and picked it up without incident… Well, no, they lost one of the keys and paid $400 for it. :)

the most important thing is to do the research. do a quick google search for[auto transport](http://www.autotransportaat.com) and you’ll find thousands of companies. get some quotes, compare, and use your common sense: don’t go too high or low. hope this was helpful!

Factoring in gas, hotels, meals, and possible air fare back home for a companion driver, shipping a car could end up being the better financial choice. People often assume it’s always cheaper to drive the car to the destination, and sometimes that’s the case, but not always.

Just a note on my experience with car shipping. I had my car shipped to Hawaii last year, from New York to the port in California then off to Hawaii. The best advise I can give as having the vehicle shipped was by far less stressful than me driving it. I went through alot of sites at that time looking for quotes… if your looking for rates, I highly recommend this outfit called five star rated vehicle shipping, they gave me five quotes to compare rates, and they did all the research for me on the transportation company credentials. Hope that may be of some help :)

Sounds like a good deal; hadn’t checked with this carrier. We may have done this too, but when we checked from Pittsburgh to Portland last year and to SFO this year (for DS’s internships), the cost was well over a grand, one way. We ended up buying a used car both last year and this and he’ll try to dispose it prior to his return without losing his shirt.

My kids drove together & had a lovely time. We were happy they had NO mechanical problems & were able to stay in decent, inexpensive lodging along the way. They spent extra time in the places they found of interest. They are happy they did NOT use a service. For peace of mind, we had them pay for AAA extended towing, “just in case.” Fortunately, it was not needed & no tickets either! The car they drove was 20 years old, obviously mechanically sound & had a check up before their major road trip.

We just shipped a car to our D from Louisiana to California; it cost us $900. We used Wheels on Wheels. The process was easy and the car arrived in 5 days!. Wheels on wheels is not a trucking company, it is a broker company that finds you a truck to transport your car (i think WoW is a one man operation). The guy is not the best at communicating, but he found us a great trucker who kept in touch with us the whole time, and delivered the car to our D’s apartment.
We did a search int he internet and chose-based on price- between companies that were registered with the Dept. of transportation; had insurance and were in good standing with the BBB.

Our S & D just finished driving from LA to SF to DC/VA. They spent about 10 days on the drive & were able to have some nice visits along the way. S’s employer will reimburse for the drive but would NOT pay to ship the car. The kids listened to audio lectures on the drive.
