@CheddarcheeseMN - don’t fool yourself by kidding; I did initially want to buy two, but the decorator I’m working with convinced me that two would be too big for the space I want to put it in! They had two in the store that were slightly different from each other (like in the link above), but one had already been sold and not picked up. I had the store check to see if they could get me another one like the one that had been sold, and they weren’t able to, although they did say this coming spring they would be getting in more similar prints. But I’m sure it will be at full price (if not more this time around), so I’m glad I got what I did.
And of course when I was in the store, I didn’t even ask about shipping availability; if I had, and they had told me then they don’t ship, I might have forgotten the whole thing. It wasn’t until I was home several weeks later that I finally measured out the space on the wall and realized two would be too much. Then I called to purchase it and made the assumption they could ship and found out they wouldn’t. I did think it was pretty sweet that they delivered it to D’s condo in South Boston for free, though.
@doschicos - yea, tonight H hinted that depending on the quote to ship, I may be making a road trip out to Boston! And we mentioned that to D, and she said if I came out there, then I wasn’t driving my car back, because she is convinced she is buying my car from me (it’s 12 years old now, 161K miles) and I’m getting a new one. So if that happened, this would turn into a REALLY expensive transaction! But I’d then have to purchase my new car from a Boston dealer, which I don’t want to do because around here, it’s really worth it to have your car serviced over the years at the dealership you bought it from - some nice perks come with it.
What kind of perks? In my area, they tend to treat all service jobs the same. My understanding is that warranty service is a big money maker for dealerships since the profit margin is larger.
The lounge is really nice - they have a massage chair (yes, I’ve used it)! And free limited drinks and snacks (of course they still have vending machines for people who want something other than what they offer for free). Nice work area separate from TV area. Free washes anytime you bring it in for service (although H’s dealership offers free washes at any time). They are very generous with their loaners - even if you only need one for 2-3 hours - and they’re free - you just have to replace the gas you use. If I drop my car off for work and they need it for a day, but I can’t get back to pick it up for two days, I can keep the loaner for however long it takes me to get back to get my car. If I want to go up the street to grocery shop or shop at the mall and they don’t have any loaners, they can drop me off and pick me up. I never purchased an extended warranty with this car, and am glad I didn’t. I’ve not had any major repairs in 12 years, other than maintenance (brakes, new tires, filters, etc.).
I think you could get that even if you bought the car at a different dealership. The profit margin on service/parts is pretty high and they want you to choose them.
@doschicos - oh, I’m sure I’m paying for all these perks somehow, but it makes the car ownership hassles not so painful. With previous cars, we had a local car shop that we used to be loyal to, and I couldn’t complain about their work, but the inconvenience of getting any work done was so stressful. It was next to impossible to just drop by for an oil change and expect I’d be taken in immediately. I also appreciate the record keeping that having the car serviced at the dealership brings. But anything other than a quick oil change involved having someone drop me off and pick me up; otherwise, I’d often be waiting a while before anyone could give me a ride home or pick me up - and even then, I’d be stuck at home with no car.
I think the benefits your local dealership provides aren’t that uncommon though, especially for the more upscale brands of cars. We have the same sorts of perks offered around here.
ah, that explains why you can’t roll it. The value is in the framing/glass vs the work. Man, shipping glass-good luck and I hope it makes it back to you safely. It sounds lovely
I’ve shipped stuff with glass before. When my mom downsized to assisted living, there were a number of items we had shipped to me. We had to take them to a shipper (it was a true shipper, not a UPS or Fed Ex) and place them all on a pallet. They then packed what needed to be packed (obviously not things like the garden tiller) and sent it to me on the pallet. But that was multiple items and a larger shipment. I don’t think I need a place that ships like that. Besides, that was in Houston, 12 years ago! So long ago that we found them in the yellow pages!
Most recent update (and aggravation with Fed Ex). I talked to someone at the convention center Fed Ex this afternoon. He said, yes, they can customize a packing box for the piece. But hey, he says, if you go to the Braintree location, they have a parking lot and it would be easier to bring into the store, than going to the convention center where she’d have to use metered parking on the bridge and bring it in. I told him she WENT to the Braintree location yesterday and they told her they didn’t have the materials to pack it. He said that was not an excuse. Any Fed Ex location can get the custom packing materials from another Fed Ex location if they don’t have them in stock! Needless to say, I’m furious that they blew my daughter off after her driving around yesterday trying to find a place that would ship it. I passed this along to my decorator who said it’s likely the Fed Ex location in Braintree is probably too overwhelmed with holiday shipping right now and their story would probably change after the holidays. Which is an awful excuse. Even if it was true - they could have told her that.
The guy at the convention center said he’s often the only one in the office, so if she comes, he may or may not be able to go out to the metered bridge parking and help her bring it in, depending on whether he has a customer in the store. If he does have someone in there, they have a dolly she can use to go bring it in from the car. So it will be up to daughter (or her roommate since D is now in the air on the way home now) to decide which place to go back to. Fed Ex did not win any brownie points in our book for blowing her off.
Yes, I told D this a week ago… that it could wait until after the holidays, but I suspect she wanted it to arrive here during the holidays so she could see what it looks like hung up in our living room, since she was with me when I found it. But that is her issue, not mine; I can wait. We’ll see if roommate attempts to drop it off in the next two weeks while D is home. Roommate has become somewhat like a second daughter to us, so I wouldn’t put it past her to try to do something for us like that.
I used a company called MiniMoves to ship my mom’s dining room table and chairs from Illinois to California. It isn’t cheap and probably can’t be done in a short time frame (they may have to store the item while waiting for a van load going in the right direction). But they did a stellar job wrapping it all up and I was very happy with their service.
