I was in a Crate and Barrell in a mall yesterday and when I walked in somebody was walking out with their leashed dog . Then while I was browsing another women walked in with two leashed dogs. This should not be allowed. None were wearing anything indicating a service dog status.
Man, I hope people scoop the poop.
When I was at Home Goods the other day, there were both leashed and unleashed dogs.
We’re in Florida and I admit I’m disappointed that dogs aren’t allowed on the beaches. It’s just such a change from the state and national parks in Delaware and Maryland. We’ve visited Assateague state and national parks more times than we can count and have never had issues with dogs behaving, people cleaning up , leash usage etc.
depends on the beach
We were at 5 different state parks - basically empty beaches.
Yep. No dogs in state parks. But plenty of other options in Florida!
We have a house rented for summer 2025 that is like a 2 minute walk from the beach. We almost didn’t take the house because we thought the beach prohibits dogs 24/7 and two dogs come with us on vacation. Turns out the AIRBNB host said that it’s ok to walk the dogs early in the morning on the beach (leashed) and to bring them in the evening for sunset (it’s a drop dead sunset) - but no dogs during daytime beach time. We thought that was fair - so house rented!
Dogs are allowed on the beaches (and sidewalks by the beach and bay) in San Diego before 9 am and after 4pm in the winter and after 6pm in the summer. Dogs must be leashed. So many people come here and do not follow the rules and it is very annoying. Beaches are very crowded in the summers and dogs do not need to be on the beach. And just to be clear - I do love dogs.
Dogs are allowed on the beach on Anastasia Island (St Augustine). I’m not aware of any hour restrictions but they must be on a leash. We walk our dog every day on the beach and see lots of other dogs. Everyone seems to behave as far as I can tell.
I totally get and agree with no dogs during sunbathing, sand castle building, busy times on the beach. I don’t want a stray dog come up to me when I’m sunbathing!
But it is nice to take pup for an early morning or late evening stroll while leashes.
Yes, we were camping there last year and just had to drive a few minutes out of the state park to get to a beach where dogs were permitted. We were in the panhandle this time and couldn’t find a beach that permitted dogs unless you could prove residency.
Dogs are great and they’re irresistible. I’ve never seen a person complain about being in a place where people say they “shouldn’t” be. Who makes up these rules? Given, the dog should be well behaved. Grocery stores, yeah, probably leave them home for sanitation reasons.
It depends on the beach. For example, there are 3 beaches in the two mile stretch from Cardiff Beach to Del Mar beach. All 3 of these beaches have different rules. Del Mar permits dogs off leash (dog beach). Cardiff permits dogs on leash. Solana Beach doesn’t permit dogs at all and has lifeguards driving around, actively searching for persons with dogs who cross over from the neighboring beaches on either side that permit dogs.
These could be considered North County. Closer to downtown, there are also areas that permit dogs. For example, Fiesta Island may be the largest off leash dog friendly area in the county. Dogs are allowed off leash all day, in both summer and winter.

I was at Mission Beach recently mid-day and a couple had brought their dog with its stroller down to the water’s edge and were letting it play unleashed. I waved to a lifeguard driving by and pointed to them. He was on his way to issue a safety warning but stopped at the couple on his way back; they left promptly.
This was not the first time I turned in a noncompliant dog owner to a lifeguard. I’m hesitant to approach the owners myself.
@Data10 - we are fortunate that San Diego has beaches that allow dogs all of the time. D1 and SIL take their two dogs to Fiesta Island a lot on warm days. This is the reason I get annoyed with dog owners that don’t follow the rules.
I know it’s hard for people to believe, but there are folks who are deathly afraid of dogs. I was one of those people and it took me a very long time to get comfortable with dogs. That only happened because my kids begged and begged for a dog and I finally said OK. That being said, I don’t think dogs should be allowed everywhere unless they are service dogs.
I agree, my neighborhood is a mile long in a circle so is very quiet place to exercise. I used to walk with a friend who has an irrational fear of dogs. So many people don’t secure their yards well and some of these dogs like to roam the streets. My friend can no longer walk due to fear.
St Augustine Beach allows dogs, at least at some times. I was there one day watching some people trying to teach their bulldog to surf. The bulldog was having none of it. He planted his front legs in the sand and they just pulled him and his little butt was bumping down the sand and then they get him on the surfboard and he’d last a few minutes and the whole process would start again. He was stubborn. They were persistent. It was very funny.
I don’t bring my newborn grandchild to the opera.
Why do dog-owners believe that the jumping/sniffing/barking/aggressive behavior is appropriate for a restaurant, department store, etc?
