UC has a special way of calculating GPA which may have something to do with the statistics. My GPA UC calculated is 4.22, and I think that’s good.

1rockice - The truth is, college IS the reason I started working hard in high school. Because, let’s be real, high school is a waste of time crock of S. Anyone else think writing about being motivated by college is a bad essay topic?

Its true his rank is lower than average at these schools, but a 1550 SAT should not be underestimated…thats well above the average at all of the schools, even at Yale. I say Yale is the only real reach for him, even there he has a chance and should not just automatically write himself off.

Again the numbers can be tweaked…especially in the case of UMichigan…90%??..I seriously doubt Chris Webber or a member UMich football team was in the top 10%. A 1550 would put him at the top of the class at Cornell, NW, NYU, and U of C…and Michigan has more kids taking the ACT than SAT, a 1550 there would make him the cream of the crop.

High grades won’t make up for low SAT’s (ie no validictorian is getting into these schools with a 1000 on his SAT’s), but high SAT’s can compensate for less than steller, but still good grades (ie someone just outside the top 10% with a 1500+ has at least a chance of getting in). He is in the running at every single one of these schools and should not rule himself out.

I agree. If the UC’s are safe (and it looks like they are), the list is fine. You have to take some chances in life, and a college list that might be a tad top heavy is not the worst thing. Besides, I think he will be accepted at NYU - excellent for film.

Ohio Mom,

It seems to me NYU Tisch film admissions work in a very odd way. People with steller academic stats have been known to get rejected in favor of those with less impressive stats who made what the adm. cmte. thought was a great work of art…ie showed potential to excel in the area of film.

Anyhow, I think his chances are great, and should not rule out any one of these schools.
