Should I apply early to CM?

My GPA is much higher than mediocre in Turkey. Only one or two people in my class have a 90/100 GPA, no one has a GPA over 92/100 in my class. It is not possible.

Let’s hope that admission officers know that. :)

I really hope they do know that but they won’t unless your school states that with your transcript. That’s why I hope you schedule an interview with CMU so you can explain your grades. I was talking to a student who was applied ED to CMU (Tepper) and got wait listed even though she had a 3.37 at one of the most competitive schools in the country. This is what she said

SAT: 2090 (600 CR 760 M 730 W)
ACT: 32 (32 English 35 Math 30 Reading 29 Science) Essay: 9
SAT II: 800 Math2 700 Chem
GPA: 3.37 UW (There’s much more to my GPA. I need to explain this.)

I go to an ultra competitive school, Stuyvesant High School in New York City. I know most kids outside from my school will not understand the statistics, so I don’t bother posting chance threads on CC. A person with a 3.7 avg from my school could get into Cornell. Someone with a 3.5 avg could get into John Hopkins, Northwestern, etc. A 3.8 or 3.9 or 4.0 could get into Harvard, Columbia, MIT, etc.

I thought her stats were good enough but I guess not. Maybe even though she went to a good school her low GPA hurt her chances…

Maybe they’ve thought that she is lacking of ECs (projects etc.)? There is no way to be sure about the reason but I have to find a way to do what has the highest potential to have the best outcome.

With this sort of attitude I wouldn’t admit her either.

I know this to be false in my situation. I got a 590 on the MathI, and a 520 on the Math2(you read right). I submitted scores from 4 different tests altogether, and they eliminated the math2 score on the website, while just showing the other 3. I got into compEng, but i had huge things other than academics going for me(diversity, socioeconomic status, other interests, etc).

With that said, i still suggest you take the math2, and score at least in the 700 range.

You’ve got a 1.66 GPA. No chance you get into CMU.

I think you mean a 2.8 GPA. You divide the raw score (70) by 4 to get the 4.0 scale GPA.

Er, by 25** not by 4. Yeah I’m smart.

You are missing the point: the grading system in my country is different and actually a really little percentage has a GPA over 85-90.

Try not to evaluate my condition with US high school statistics.

If you apply early decision and get in don’t you have to commit to the school? It might limit your choices. Maybe I’m wrong…

You are correct, but if I get accepted I can commit to CMU. :)

No, if you got a 70 out of a 100 on a test, you would receive a C-. A C- = 1.66.

CMU doesn’t go by minuses and pluses, it goes by the 4.0 system of dividing a 100-point GPA by 25. That’s generally the accepted collegiate conversion method. But it’s a moot point, since apparently the GPA is very good at the OP’s high school. :p
