Should I apply to these colleges?

@4Gulls it seems to me that GW is a reputable college for programs like politics and IR and such but not so much for business. Can you shed some light on this?

OP @ #12: http://miamioh.edu/fsb/

I don’t now much about GW’s business reputation, but I do know they have a Business school and offer degrees in Finance, Accounting, Business Admin, etc. They also have some 5-year MBA programs. I would imagine being in DC, there would be some interesting internships. With your stats, I think you would get accepted. Worth exploring.

GW’s problem is that it’s very expensive AND is lousy with aid. So, run the NPC and show the results to your parents.

Thanks @4Gulls, I am looking into it.

@MYOS1634 I doubt the NPC works for international students. Do you think I have the stats to get into Skidmore?

You’re correct: they’re not accurate. But they do tell you what the absolute minimum you’ll have to pay, is. So if your parents say it’s too much even with the scholarship you secured, don’t apply to that college, because odds are good you’ll have to pay more than the NPC indicates. You can thus use the NPC as a financial litmus test.
Skidmore is a low reach I think - your A-level scores are strong and your SAT’s good, plus the fact you secured a scholarship should make you an appealing candidate for them. Business can be combined with French or Political Science, they have International Affairs too, and you can easily sprinkle the necessary statistics courses (it’s rather easy to double major or major + minor).

@MYOS1634 This is one more reason why I want to apply to Skid - I would love to double major! And the absence od a Greek culture is an added bonus. The Greek life at Union is why I have ruled it out of my list.
Also, I would really appreciate it if you can offer me some tips on how I can demonstrate my interest in Skid. There is no supplemental essay and being an international applicant I can’t visit or interview.

Fill out the “request info” form to get on their radar. They’ll send you emails: read and click on them systematically. Read the website carefully and email admissions with questions that aren’t answered on the website. Request an alumni interview. If you do all that, you’ll have demonstrated as much interest as any international possibly can, short of applying ED.
BTW, Saratoga Springs is a very nice town.

Actually I am considering it for ED, so I might do that too! Thank you very much. You’ve been very helpful!

So I emailed admissions at Skidmore and got a reply from Dean Mendes himself! He tells me Pakistanis are underrepresented at Skid, so does that count as a hook? In any case, I am thrilled to hear back from him.

yes it does… so if I were you, I’d apply ED if it’s a school you’d be happy to go to.

I am just concerned about the weather. I hear New York has a long, snow covered winter. :expressionless: My other top choice right now is Tulane. It’s in the south and they don’t have much of a winter there. But then again Tulane has a party reputation and I don’t want that either. And then there’s the threat of hurricanes, so I really can’t decide.

Are you sure you want to ED to a school you haven’t visited? Is there anyway for you to make visits to accepted student days at a few colleges in April? If not, and if you are sure your scholarships and family resources will cover all the expenses (including travel, health insurance, and spending money), then ED to your top choice may make sense.

Internationals can rarely visit. While I agree it’d be best for Op to visit both before ed deadlines, I don’t know if her school would give her a week off to do so in the upcoming two weeks…

Op:
Yes, NY winters are cold and snowy. What matters is whether it’s cold and cloudy (low light ) or cold and bright with blue skies in Saratoga Springs. Ask on the specific forum and look into it. Typically, cold but bright light is much easier to bear than cold and cloudy.
New Orleans weather is much better most of the year, no contest.
The two schools are very different. Tulane does have a drinking problem but is large enough that you’ll find people who don’t drink. It’s more preprofessional than Skidmore - more students learn for grades there and because that’ll lead to a job, not because they’re so excited about the material or because they see learning as an end in and of itself. Both attitudes are respectable but it makes for a different environment. I’d say Skidmore has an artsy side Tulane doesn’t have.

@intparent unfortunately it will not be possible for me to visit any of the schools until August.

@MYOS1634 Thank you! I do see your point.

I am also looking at U Miami (school of business). However, my biggest concern is the threat of hurricanes in Florida. Can anyone tell me how frequent are these hurricanes, and how destructive?

^ University of Miami (in Coral Gables, Florida) or Miami University (in Oxford, Ohio)?

Hurricane season is generally June through November. They can be pretty destructive. It’s also a problem for New Orleans, Louisiana, home of Tulane University.

There will be hurricanes in the south, Tornados in the Midwest, Nor’Easters and Blizzards in the Northeast, Midwest, and Northwest. The US isn’t the place to be if you want your weather mild.
This being said, are those dangerous? Yes, if you stand outside to send pics to your FB or Instagram. If you follow directions - and ALL colleges will have “weather situation directions” -, you’ll be fine.

Tulane and both Miami us have pretty major Greek life.

@gandalf78 The one in Florida.
So how do the locals live with such a destructive climate?

@MYOS1634 I am very willing to follow directions.

@OHMomof2 So I found out. Thanks for letting me know.

How is Dallas as a city for college? A friend suggest Southern Methodist University. How is there BBA program? Is it respected? Will it be hard to get in? Thanks!
