Should I drop AP Bio second semester of senior year?

It’s an unnecessary risk.

It may not matter to an E Washington but it may to a U Washington.

There is no way to know - but transparency is always the smartest policy.

No, the classes in question are just being removed from their schedule prior to the beginning of third trimester.

But come to think of it, usually this is just one-term classes. I don’t actually know what would happen on our transcripts if you dropped a year-long class, so this may be inapplicable to the OP’s situation.

A college that admits the OP may not like the surprise that the final transcript does not show the same courses that the OP reported as in-progress on the application.

In which HS is AP Bio taught as a one-semester class?

I don’t think throwing hypotheticals like this at the OP is helpful. It’s clear from the original post that AP Bio at THIS HS if a full year class, and that dropping it means dropping it mid-year. Not “I fell in love with ethnomusicology so I finished off my AP Bio obligation in December to pick up an extra elective”. It’s a nice narrative- but it has two disadvantages- It’s not true, and it’s duplicitous (sending in a transcript senior year means NOT dropping “hard” classes because you are finding them hard. They are supposed to be hard.).

I’ll defer to the boarding school adviser’s opinion, but I and other colleagues of his would consider that MVC v.MVC Honors would be splitting hairs, especially for a student who doesn’t intend to major in math. I get that it’s a form of signaling and it probably matters to the BS and its culture.

AP Calc on the transcript is used as a shorthand at many sub 20% acceptance colleges so it’s different from admissions caring about 2 levels of post AP classes (they’d care about the post AP class since it’s a strong signal at this and other BS, but not beyond that.)

^ this to me is the #1 question to ask: if you drop AP Bio, have you met your graduation reqs for science AND do you meet the recommended number of science courses for admission at your match and reach colleges?

Also, if you drop AP Bio, will you be allowed to take a semester-long science class to replace it? Any other class?

People above who stated you’ll need to inform colleges you applied to are right BTW. But that’s step 2 after you know the consequences of dropping the class wrt graduation and wrt college entrance requirements at each college you applied to.

“Is there such a thing as non honors Multi Variable class? By its nature, it’s an honors/advanced class and should have the same weight as AP Calc.”
Yes that was my point - all post AP classes are considered as “post AP” even if the BS has an MVC section for the math-advanced group and another MVC Honors section for the super math advanced group.
If the BS simply notes Honors as an indication it’s post AP (ie., there aren’t 2 sections and it’s their way of denoting a post AP weight on the transcript) then of course the student shouldn’t drop it since it’s his senior math class, but that seemed self evident to me.

Are there high schools that offer a non-honors multivariable calculus course, since that course is already substantially more advanced than typical math progression for high school students? Seems like a course for high school students that advanced in math would be designated as honors.

The HS and BS I know offer MVC and it carries AP weight since it’s a post-AP class. It’s not called “MVC Honors” because it’s obviously post AP Calculus where “Honors” implies “not AP”.
Some BS have multiple sections of MVC because a fair number of students reach Calc BC in 11th grade so MVC is the logical choice for senior math.
Now this specific BS may either denote further rigor in the MVC class with the “Honors” title (ie., 2 sections of MVC which I assumed but may have been wrong) or have “Honors” as an indication for the weighted GPA only.
I’ll stop here because this would derail the thread.

Exactly. My son’s school also has Intro to MVC. This is geared to kids who took AB Calc.

As a qualified yes, our HS has no honors classes at all. We use a college-style numbering system, so “normal” 12th grade classes (which we often claim are college level) are 400 courses, and classes that usually people only get to on an accelerated schedule are 500 courses.

Calc BC is a 500 Math course (I think by rule all of our few AP classes are 500 level, even though we have some 300 and 400 level courses we consider more advanced than the AP equivalent we do not offer). And then so are the post-calc Math electives like MVC.

None of this is probably really answering your question, though. I personally would also find it surprising if a high school did designate some classes honors (which we don’t), but then did not designate MVC as one of those honors classes.

Some highly selective colleges have Communication majors.

Where did MVC come in? Student asked about dropping AP bio. Confused…

Can we get back to the OP’s question please. Math courses were not the question.

To OP, have you went and talked with the teacher?

I didn’t appreciate this until I got to college, teachers are people too. No body wants to be THAT roadblock the caused you to lose your life opportunity.

Several times during my UG, I struggled with classes due to whatever reason, I would make an appointment, go speak with the professor in person and basically beg to be let passed with a C (in all cases I ended up passing with a higher grade). Almost always, they were every sympathetic to my struggles and surprised all I’m asking was a C to pass. As long as you are not asking for an A, begging to be passed with a C is very doable for as long as 1)the teacher doesn’t hate you; 2) you are not performing poorly for lack of effort; 3) you don’t make a big deal about this; 4)you are generally a well performing student. Oh, and if you get in somewhere awesome also makes it hard for them to fail you – looks bad for the school to get someone’s admission revoked.

Just go and talk with the teacher to find out what your options are. I guarantee you will be fine.

Pedantic also does not have an “s.” Move on and focus on the OP. Compliance is not optional.
