You can do most of what you need to out here by reading forums and asking questions. For my kids, the only places I’d have been spending money on counselors might have been for essay reviews (there are LOTS of essays involved in applying to colleges, many colleges have supplemental essays in addition to the common app essay). Some students benefit from SAT or ACT prep classes as well. But you CAN self study if you need to. SO… you don’t have to get a counselor. If it is a financial hardship for your family, don’t do it.
