should I go to USF or listen to my parents and go to community college.

ok so here’s the breakdown of how much the University of San Francisco gave me. $31,200 in university grants ($15,600 per semester), $5,290 in federal Pell grant. $4,000 ($2,000 per semester) in supplemental Education opportunity grants. $4,200 in work study. The rest is $3,500 in subsidized loan ($1,750 per semester) and $2000 in unsubsidized loans. the cost of attendance is $68,286.00 but that includes tuition, dorms, books, and transportation. I’m not sure if I should accept the award or not I’m still going to have a talk with my parents if they want me to attend the school even though they want me to stay in Texas and go to community college. I’m okay with taking the grants and doing work study during school and I’m also going to take classes over the summer to get rid of general ed requirements to lower the cost and i also have AP/CLEP credits too. I’m not sure what I should do. I wanna go here and have the full college experience but i also feel like i’m making the wrong decision.

Your net cost at USF, after grants, loans and work study, will be about $17,800. How will you pay for this, if you decide to go to USF? If you don’t have an answer to that question, I don’t think you have much of a choice.

I’ll mainly do work study during school and getting internships in san francisco. I’m just wondering if it’s a reasonable decision to go here or not economically. What if I’m just paying for tuition and dorm instead bc I can pay for books and transportation out of my own pocket.

Easy answer school comes off of the table. Who is going to loan you 40k?
With you having close to a 0 EFC, you already know that your family cannot afford this school.

Make the best of your choice in Texas (where you will probably attend close to free). get a summer job and start saving money so that you can have the “college experience” in texas junior and senior year

How are you paying? Your parents are clearly NOT paying. DO you have an actual decision? And don’t assume you can take summer classes, that those summer classes would even transfer, should you go to a 4 yr as a freshman in the fall. You will only know if your CLEP classes and even APs are useful if you sit down and make sure they apply.
If you are a great student, instate for Texas, why is CC your only option? How are your stats? Your parents see you as a CC student, so what is the real picture? You haven’t applied for even lower tier Texas schools?

I mean I applied to schools in texas like UNT, UT Austin, Texas State but the majority of them gave me loans with very little grants. I just think I should go to community college and transfer I guess.

Your work study probably has a cap. You can’t take summer classes without paying more. A student can’t easily earn as much as you need a year, and no one will loan to you without a parent signature.

What are your stats that you get no instate scholarships?

GPA: 3.6
New SAT: 1200
Class rank: 80/540
EC: 4 years of band, 4 years of theatre, 1 year of yearbook, 2 years of academic decathlon.
those are my stats I just regret not trying hard enough in high school but it is what it is.

Is that your cheapest offer???

By my calculation, the gap is $18,096 per year ($9,048 per semester). With a EFC close to zero, where will this $18K come from? This school is clearly unaffordable.

There has to be a college that admitted you where the listed net cost is under 10k?
If you attend cc, does your town’s cc have a partnership with a university?
As a lower income students you should know your odds of graduating with a bachelor’s degree decrease substantially if you start at a cc. So is there an affordable 4-year that admitted you?

Texas resident here, too many of our public schools are not affordable unless you’re very high stat. Your stats are very solid. Have you looked into the following schools, they would give you good aid/merit and might be affordable. I think you still might be able to apply.

Angelo State University
Tarlington State University
Stephen F. Austin University
Sul Ross University
Texas A&M University - Commerce
University of Houston

Good luck to you.

You include UT as if you have been admitted? Is that right?

You can still apply to the UHouston’s Honors College (if you have not applied to UH, do so using your Applytexas app and check the Honors box). Use your BEST literary analysis paper from an Honors English, AP Lit, or DE English class (not just a random A paper, but a paper that your teacher felt was especially good). It is a very good honors college.

Did you get into UT Austin?

UNT: email Kelli.Butler@unt.edu.
Highlight the fact you’refrom a low income Texas family, first generation to go to college, and have an upward trend, with a … GPA junior year and a … senior year, and a courseload of x# of honors classes and the following AP classes: …; …;…;… Your favorite thinker is … because… and you’d love to discuss (book) in Honors 1100 “The Good Society”. You would really like to be part of the Honors College and would like to know if you have a chance even if your freshman year grades put you outside the top 10% of your high school class. And if you’re allowed to apply, is it too late for a scholarship (as you’re low income, anything would help you in being abe to attend college, if eligible).
Don’t forget to thank her and to signe your full name.

Since you’ve been admitted to Texas State, also apply to Honors. Use the above as your cover letter EXCEPT instead of “Honors 1100: The GOod Life”, use one class that matches your reading in the Fall 2018 list here: http://www.txstate.edu/honors/courses/offerings.html

UT Arlington is still accepting apps.
http://www.uta.edu/honors/

UTEP is still accepting apps and to its honors program as well.

UT Tyler is still accepting apps but the deadline for Honors just passed, so you’d need to send an email to:
honors@uttyler.edu
Replace “Honors 1100: The Good Society” with “HNRS1351”

SFA State U is still accepting apps. Use your Apply Texas app and also apply to School of Honors.

TLU is still accepting apps and has automatic scholarships. For an EFC zero and your stats, net cost would be 14k (8,000 after loans and work study).

HENDRIX is still accepting apps!!!
It’s a TERRIFIC college. Based on what you shared, it actually “sounds like you”.
(“Can you spend all day (and more) talking about big ideas and asking questions? Are you excited when you discover the answer to something you never knew before? Do you like to raise your hand in class … whether or not you know the answer?”)
Their Odyssey program is great and they have excellent financial aid.

IETA: ran the NPC and unfortunately it looks like the net costs would be around 24K, which is way too high. However they’ve been known for offering very good packages depending on what you have to offer so I think it’s worth sending an app through commonapp.

What are your commutable options?
