Should I Take AP Music Theory?

Yes! I’ve already taken H physics and H chem. I’m currently taking AP chem and AP calc AB. (All of which I’ve enjoyed, thankfully!)

It seems AP statistics and anatomy are both electives for you. Both can be taken later at the college level.

Since you have sung in a choir and played piano, it is possible, I concede, that music theory could ignite futher interest in music for you- if you have another opening in your schedule in place ot stats or anatomy.

So you can, if you want, swap out anatomy. I’d heed what all said about theory but not knowing you, no one can truly say you shouldn’t.

Best of luck.

If you want to take music theory…take it. My kids both discussed this with their high school ensemble directors before making the choice.

One of my kids IS in health care, and their senior year, they took AP Music Theory, and Culinary Arts. Actually both of our kids did that…but I’m emphasizing the health care career one because it’s what you seem to want as well.

I echo those that have said it’s a great class and can be quite hard. I think it depends on what kind of music brain one has. My kid happened to find it intuitive and joyful, whereas kid’s friends - who had been in the same orchestra classes all 4 years and were academically at the top of the HS class - found it very difficult.

Since the alternative to doing AP Music Theory is a study hall, couldn’t you enroll in theory now, see how it goes in the first week or two and then decide whether to switch to study hall if you aren’t feeling great about it after the start of the year?

It’s going to be impossible to know how hard you find the class. It’s not one where you should assume it will be harder for you than kids who have done more formal music classes or training. To some it comes very naturally, and to others it doesn’t. My youngest took it as a sophomore without any prior theory classes, having just done band as an elective. He was a percussionist and had only studied piano for 2 years in 2-3rd grade. And he was not a singer and didn’t do choir. But he still liked the course and didn’t find it too challenging and got a 5 on the AP.

It seems like there is no downside starting the year in it and quickly deciding before you are stuck in it with a grade. Especially since you seem really interested in it personally.
