Shower Caddies

washdad! lol!!

Well, it took me a while but I’m still laughing Washdad!

Ds#1 used a small translucent plastic caddy with square holes on the sides from BBB for the last two years. It is just big enough to hold a small cup, toothbrush and toothpaste, bar soap in a box, a bottle of shampoo and a disposable razor. The first year he was keeping in his room and toting it to the bathroom down the hall. Last year he was in a suite and the six suitemates left their caddies in the bathroom - six little caddies in a row. This coming year he will be in an apartment off campus. So ds#2 will be taking his turn with the same caddy in the dorm next year. When they travel they both have a canvas tote bag type thing for their toiletry. They are not very fussy as long as that type of things are not in a bright colored plaid.

My son also got a smallish plastic caddy with holes after a year of choosing to not have one. And he’s taken up shaving with a regular razor, rather than an electric like his dad, and even bought some product to go with it, some sort of shaving gel. The things they learn in college!

Shower caddy thread…OK, Wash-Dad.

rofl ellen!! Tickled a new funny bone…

Robe pockets- what robe??? See that thread…

I made my own. Got something with a handle from Walmart, and drilled some holes at the bottom (that thing already had holes on the side). Total cost $1

remember the slogan. If Walmart does not have it, your S or D does not need it.

Sophomore son purchased this last week when I “made” him go to BB&B with me to replace his nasty comforter. I bribed him with lunch at his favorite restaurant.

He said that the plastic thing he used last year didn’t drain quickly enough and had some other problem I don’t remember.

Finally got my SS to do the BBB visit – great marketing tool. Just used a scanner and we pick up our order in Durham. Saves so much room in the cars. I digress. Anyway, I suggested the shower caddy and after they stopped laughing, I was advised that they’ll use their shaving kits.

As for robes, well ----- they are each on a coed floor. They said they’ll wrap their towels around themselves. We’ll see.

mafool - that’s the same caddy my son bought. He wasn’t sure he’d use it (wanted to wait and see what the other guys did!) but because it was a wire basket, he figured he could use it for other purposes if he didn’t use it as a shower caddy.

OK, I just want to say how much I love this thread. It is so fun to focus on shower caddies when you are about to launch a child, and I found several such things to focus on when preparing to release our son to his future two years ago.
Any old timers here who recall one of my other all time favorite threads? The one entitled, Staples or Paper Clips…which is best for Applications?
Priceless…and we read the input on this profound subject with great interest of course.

mafool, that’s the one I thought D2 could inherit from D1. Unfortunately D2 immediatly hit on the problem… “Isn’t my toothbrush going to fall out?”
She seems happy with the Target one mentioned earlier although I’m sure it will get horribly moldy within the year. At that point, she can take the wire one and carry her toothbrush in her teeth like Carmen Miranda… maybe WashDad’s soulmate will be there to tip her…

I bought the one mafool linked to as well, because it’s not too big (some of the bigger ones could carry about 8 bottles of shampoo…I have a decent amount of bath stuff, but not THAT much), and because out of all of the other ones I saw, none of them had enough drainage to please me. Plus, I got one with a turquoise plastic trim to match my towels :). Yes, I’m a girl, and I have a touch of OCD :).

Also, I have to third, or whatever, the Target love. They are geniuses. Everything–Ev.Er.Y.Thing.–is coordinated, cute, cheap, and of pretty decent quality (good enough for me, at least). Right now I have coordinating sheets, comforter, elephant pillow, and dorm chair, and if I wanted to, I could add in coordinated towels, rugs, drapes, shower caddy, hangers, dishes…probably even other stuff. Plus, I feel like an okay human being when I shop there, as opposed to when I give money to a certain morally suspect competitor, and that’s always good!

Edit: Oh, and with the toothbrush: isn’t she probably going to have to take a cup as well? Problem solved!

And before you invest in the shower caddy, you might want to check if you son or daughter has a sink in the room itself. Last year my son and his roommate had a sink and cabinet in their room so all they needed for the bathroom (which they just shared with one other room) was shampoo and body wash.

Two inexpensive things that I bought for their semi-private bathroom were a small bathroom rug for when they stepped out of the shower and a stick on room deoderizer that I stuck behind the toilet. When I showed my son the rug he said, “oh, good idea!” For a month (I brought the stuff at parents weekend) they had been just stepping on the floor from the shower and most likely soaking the whole floor. I prefer not to think how often the rug was washed after that but assume it got a proper send off to the dumpster at the end of the year.

Gosh, this is so great. I’ve been out of town & am just now back to see what’s new on CC…

I was having the same worry about my son. If it weren’t for this thread, I’m not sure how he would have responded to my somewhat unusual solution (below), but I just prefaced showing it to him by telling him about this thread. He laughed & said it would be fine…

We had an old dishwasher that quit working & we were putting it out on the curb for “large item pickup” & I spied the silverware basket. Being a bit of a packrat, I wondered what use I might find for it & immediately thought “shower caddy.” It’s that “hospital green” color, so not girlish, & it’s not terribly big.

I know this won’t help most of you, but wanted to post anyway, because it really IS fun to see that my concerns aren’t so “weird.”

swkmom - you’re my hero! That’s a cool solution since most of the caddies available at retail places are way too big for the usual college male (my son included who did default to the classic rectangular bin a couple of years ago out of desperation on the part of his mother-give me credit though, I did find him a really ugly green one that he could live with).

Rising freshman D is a different story. Found a canvas-y, vinyl lining with drain holes tote bag type “thingy” at BB&B that she is going to try. It’s either that or a big bucket with nail holes punched in it by yours truly. Give me strength, we take her to school in 3 weeks. Boys are SO low maintenance. (But I am SO going to miss my D.)

I didn’t buy my S any kind of caddy when he lived in the dorm. He prob. would have laughed at me anyway.

His favorite saying is “Don’t go all Mom on me”

He lived directly across from the hall bathroom so I’m just assuming he carried his soap and shampoo rolled up in the towel. He had a sink in his room so shaving wasn’t a concern.
