Sick of mainstream media , anyone ?

The term came into use as a perjorative on the right to decry the conspiracy against us!

There is no conspiracy, just huge brain wash, but it is everywhere and more so at educational institutions, and if you dig up who is funding all of this, you will find out that you might be completely incorrect. Again, taking info at face value is dangerous, creates very distorted picture of what is going on, who lies the most and why they are doing so. But again, we are in free country, if one decided to get his brains washed, then nobody can take this from him (or her). Of course, it is much more evident in places like NYC, wohoo, huge place that is almost completely sterile in a sense that nobody can think independently, nope, few who could are bashed down by the rest so badly, they will never dare after first attempt. brain was at its pick, the best in a world, first quality!

Obviously I need brainwashing or something because the current brain has absolutely no idea what post 62 meant. None whatsoever.

“The term came into use as a perjorative on the right to decry the conspiracy against us!”

This is true. They labelled all other news except FOX and Rush Limbaugh as the mainstream media and now, after the last election, one of your own, has labelled Fox, et al, as the Conservative Entertainment Complex.

oh. okay. thanks

I was wondering if there was some “alternative” media I was missing out on. I can be a bit out of the loop on these things.

I was going to be pretty bummed if I was missing out on some amazing music or films.

It’s more than just Fox and Rush. There is a vast array of rightwing media – and I wouldn’t say that Fox or Limbaugh are even in the top five of most influential. I guess you don’t partake? (Teasing there!)

Tbh, I’ve only ever heard mainstream media continually talked about on Fox. But to me, it means the big news corporations which strive to entertain as well as “inform”- CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc.

I never knew so many people listen to NPR.
A few years ago, my son was being interviewed on NPR. Immediately and several weeks after that, many of our family and friends from all over the country emailed and called to say they heard that 50 second interview. I was able to listen to the interview on their website. Until then, I hardly paid attention to NPR.

"Obviously I need brainwashing or something because the current brain has absolutely no idea what post 62 meant. None whatsoever. "
-Another prediction that came true. I feel like a hand reader even without a hand, scary…but entertaining.

You make disparaging predictions about other posters, MiamiDAP? I guess I should feel flattered.

It must be a secret code that only you can read.

“It’s more than just Fox and Rush. There is a vast array of rightwing media – and I wouldn’t say that Fox or Limbaugh are even in the top five of most influential. I guess you don’t partake? (Teasing there!)”

I know there is now, but in the beginning when the phrase was coined, there were pretty much only those two, and I’d put money on it that it was Limbaugh who coined the term.

And no, I do not partake.

NPR is entertainment too. You cant pretend they are an unbiased news source. After all you can donate money to have them report on your pet issues.

I stopped watching TV news a few years ago; I have a tendency to get sucked in to big news events and it wasn’t healthy for me to dwell on the very sad, violent stories that get so much air time. Between my work reading, my Facebook feed & CC, I find out about most major stories within about 1/2 hour of them becoming public. Then I find sources that I like & trust to read up on them. Don’t need to listen to talking heads blab about the same thing over and over, report misinformation and analyze things from their networks preferred point of view.

I turn on the local news if there’s a potential weather situation; as a NJ native I am usually amused by what is the lead story in Nashville. Love hearing about an 11 year old’s fundraiser vs. the murder count in NYC.

Agree with the earlier poster who mentioned Vanity Fair. In depth articles about things you wouldn’t expect when you see Jennifer Lawrence on the cover. Switched to Time magazine now that Newsweek doesn’t publish in print (primarily because D2 needs the hard copies of articles for her AP Gov & Economics classes.) Good friend just recommended reading “The Week” news magazine; she’s a BBC and NPR girl & I see their partners are Salon, Mental Floss and Slate. Stopped getting the local paper in print as it was pathetic, but I get their local news section emailed to me every morning, just so I know the local headlines.

I don’t think it was Limbaugh who coined the term “mainstream media” but I do think he was the person who popularized the term “alternative media” in connection with the right. It was Michelle Malkin who coined the term “lamestream media,” however. There were other organizations on the right back in the dark ages, as well, but if you don’t partake, they likely don’t cross your path.

Yes, highly unlikely.

I agree, OP, but I do make a distinction between the Kardashian saga, and the inauguration of the President. I feel that the latter is legitimate news whereas the former is not.

What I’ve noticed of late is the technique of the MSN to sort of skip-the-record-needle to where they want us to be as a society. So whole national conversations just suddenly skipped and now we’re at this new place. And of course there’s always a poll to be commissioned that proves we are there.

I don’t think the MSN is laughably lousy. I think it is a stifling force for bad for the most part.

Hey Kim is moving into a new house in Beverley Hill. The other one is an event that comes off every 4 years. Its the opposite of news.

I think what I can’t stand about NPR is the sort of clubby tone of we are the smart educated progressive good people and you listen to us in your car and so you can belong. It honestly creeps me out.

I don’t get that vibe at all. The people I hear seem to be salt of the earth types - no frills - like Carl Kasel (no longer doing the news) and Steve Inskeep. In addition to the news, I really enjoy This American Life, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, Fresh Air and a locally produced show, The Signal. I’ve heard hours of Car Talk too.
